I. .\GrantDevine_Comb.csv: This file contains the total inflow volume to Grant Devine Reservoir for the 30 days with the largest streamflow volume between March and May and the mean of the 3- and 12-month SPEI values for each November 1st. Spring streamflow volume for a given calendar year is paired with SPEI from the previous November 1st value. Column A is an unnamed index number, column B is a year in a stochastic simulation, column C is named “simnum” and is the stochastic simulation number, column D is named “mnspei” and is the mean of the 3- and 12-month SPEI for November 1 of each year in a stochastic simulation, and column E is named “SprintgThirtyTot” and is the total inflow volume for the 30 days with...

Synopsis: Prior to European settlement, the Northern Mixed-grass Prairie was a mosaic of wetland, grassland and grass-shrub habitats, with riparian and floodplain forests along major drainages. Even today, the physiographic area can be characterized as being one of the largest still relatively intact grassland landscapes that persist in North America. It is the continent’s most important production area for waterfowl and is the heart of the breeding range for some of North America’s rarest species of grassland birds. A comparison of relative abundance estimates among physiographic areas sampled by the North American Breeding Bird Survey indicates that more than 40% of the world’s population of Baird’s Sparrows,...

Overview This directory was developed to provide discovery information for anyone looking for publicly accessible repositories that house geological materials in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, this resource is intended to be a tool to facilitate a community of practice. The need for the directory was identified during planning for and follow-up from a drill core repository webinar series in Spring 2020 for public repository curators and staff in the U.S. and Canada hosted by the Minnesota Geological Survey and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Additional supporting sponsors included the U.S. Geological Survey National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program and the Association of American...

Greater sage-grouse population components devrived using an 18-km maximum connection distance. Analysis was conducted using the CONEFOR SENSINODE 2.2 software package and this dataset was developed from lek data obtained from the state wildlife agencies. Components containing < 5 leks have been removed in order to protect the location of single or small groups of leks.

Greater sage-grouse genetic connectivity is essential to the species persistence across the Great Northern landscape; without such connectivity the greater sage-grouse may suffer the same fate as many other related species of grouse, which disappeared from the middle and eastern portion of the United States due to loss of habitat coupled with inbreeding depression. To prevent isolation in the face of energy development and other landscape changes it is essential that we evaluate both fine-scale connectivity and assign relative importance to different leks (breeding populations) on the landscape. This massive task cannot be accomplished with existing tools and maps; fortunately, advanced molecular genomic analyses...

Conclusions: Elevation, slope and the percentages of bogs and fens in a landscape influence the degree to which mid-boreal lakes are sensitive to acidic deposition orignating from nearby mining operations. Thresholds/Learnings: Synopsis: This study evaluates the acid sensitivity of lakes in Saskatchewan within ~300km of Fort McMurray. The study area is downwind of atmospheric emissions sources from regional oil sands mining operations and there is concern that the lakes may be threatened by acidification. A helicopter sampling program was implemented in late September 2007 and 2008 to measure 16 chemical variables (e.g., Ca, Mg, Na, pH) and 15 environmental variables (e.g., latitude, elevation, slope, percent bog,...

This metadata references the polygonal ARC/INFO GIS cover showing the current and historic distribution of potential habitat, or range, of the Greater Sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) and Gunnison Sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) in Western North America. This data was initially researched and compiled by Dr. Michael A. Schroeder, research biologist for the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. The initial draft of current and historic range data was mapped and submitted to state, federal, or provincial natural resource agencies and other experts for review, comment, and editing. The final product represents the best available science and expert review available at the time of compilation.Definition...

A comprehensive study to evaluate water-quality trends in the International Souris River Basin, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Canada and North Dakota, United States was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the International Joint Commission. This page contains .csv files of water-quality data for stream and reservoir sites in the Souris River Basin in North Dakota, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Each file contains information on major ions (MI), nutrients (NUT), trace metals (TM), sediment (SED), and physical parameters (PHY). These data contain numerous columns that are described in the entity and attributes of these files. These files contain the water-quality observations for the statistical...

The whooping crane (Grus americana) is a listed endangered species in North America, protected under federal legislation in the United States and Canada. The only self-sustaining and wild population of Whooping Cranes nests at and near Wood Buffalo National Park near the provincial border of Northwest Territories and Alberta, Canada. Birds from this population migrate through the Great Plains of North America and winter along the Gulf Coast of Texas at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding lands. These data represent migration corridors and precision estimates for this population that can be used for conservation planning activities, including targeting conservation, mitigation, and recovery actions and...
There are 100 traces in the simulation. This metadata file is only associated with the first trace (Trace_1), although a similar naming convention is used in each trace folder. .\Reservoir SPEI Results\: This directory contains a folder for each trace (simulation) and each trace folder contains stochastic precipitation, stochastic potential evapotranspiration, stochastic temperature, and standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) values for Grant Devine Reservoir, Rafferty Reservoir, Lake Darling Reservoir, and Boundary Reservoir (a replicate of Rafferty Reservoir). All data are provided with a monthly time step. SPEI is calculated for a number of previous months and for each reservoir a calculation...

Conclusions: Valleys are the only areas capable of sustaining sufficient habitat for the butterfly species, Weidemeyer's Admiral. Consequently, all other areas (i.e. plains, uplands, benches, escarpments, plateaus) were deemed unsuitable. Additionally, areas devoid of shrub cover did not meet the habitat requirements of this specialized species. Thresholds/Learnings: Synopsis: Two variables were selected to model potential habitat for the butterfly species, Weidemeyer's Admiral. Topographical features derived from the Agricultural Region of Alberta Soils Inventory Database (AGRASID) and percent shrub cover derived from the Native Prairie Vegetation Baseline Inventory developed by Alberta Environment were used to...

Powerlines in the western United States and Canada as identified by the 22 source data layers used to compile this shapefile. Source data were collected by personal contact or through the internet in the winter and spring of 2004 and assimilated using ArcGIS. This file is a complete record of overhead powerline data that was avaliable as of 5/15/2004 but IS NOT INTENDED TO BE A COMPLETE REPRESENTATION OF THE SUM TOTAL OF ALL POWERLINES ON THE GROUND. These data primarily depict the higher voltage, long distance transmission lines but some arcs likely represent lower voltage distribution lines.

These data were developed to support an effort to characterize migration strategies in the U.S. Great Plains and Canadian Prairies and to explore sources of heterogeneity in their migration strategy, including space use, timing, and performance. Data come from locations and other information related to 58 marked Whooping Cranes (Grus americana) from 2010–2016. These data represent basic information about space use during migrations of marked whooping cranes, including intensity of use and fidelity.
