This child page contains qualitative multi-element compositional data from scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectrometry. The data are in the form of element maps and normalized compositional data from spots or areas. These qualitative data are accompanied by backscattered electron images and, in some cases, corresponding optical images. Quantitative measurement of features in a subset of the optical images is also presented. Data collected after July 22, 2019 are subject to secondary data review as required by the Energy and Minerals Mission Area Quality Management System (EMMA QMS). As this process is not yet complete, data collected after July 22, 2019 must be considered preliminary or provisional...

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to analyze acid residues from heavy mineral separates, polished grain mounts, and clays from sampled sediments as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). Results from EDS and SEM are presented as PDF reports and TIFF images. These data are part of a data release including grain size distribution, photographic and associated...

This dataset contains spectral parameters for absorption features found in reflectance spectra of expanded vermiculite samples. These data are provide for 52 samples of vermiculite attic insulation, horticultural products, aggregate, and packing materials derived from mines near Enoree, South Carolina; Libby, Montana; Louisa, Virginia; Palabora, South Africa; and Jiangsu, China collected from 2000 to 2016. Also included are two tables listing the spectral parameters for reflectance spectra of four expanded vermiculite samples selected to represent each of the four main historical sources of vermiculite (e.g., Libby, Montana; Enoree, South Carolina; Louisa, Virginia; and Palabora, South Africa) taken at normal spectral...
Splits of the less than 38 micron size fraction were processed to make oriented clay mounts and analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) as part of a study examining the occurrence of chromium and natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). These clay mineralogy XRD results are part of a data release including grain size distribution, photographic, and associated chemical and mineral analysis data for 36 sediment core and alluvium samples as well as select grains from...

Scanning electron microscope images of particulate matter in lung tissue from brush mouse, deer mice, and pocket gophers.
We developed and tested a new method for in situ characterization and distribution of inorganic particles in biopsied lung tissue from three diverse human subject groups using field emission scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive analyzer. A backscattered electron image of each frame was acquired to locate inorganic particulate matter. The electron beam was deflected to points on the particles in the field of view to acquire an energy dispersive spectrum. The acquired spectra were used to identify the particle type.
We developed and tested a new method for in situ characterization and distribution of inorganic particles in biopsied lung tissue from three diverse human subject groups using field emission scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive analyzer. The ICP-MS data table provides the concentrations of elements (in parts per billion) analyzed in the filtrate solutions from the tissue digestion method. This step was done to help determine if the phases identified during the in situ examination might dissolve during tissue digestion in a bleach solution.
We developed and tested a new method for in situ characterization and distribution of inorganic particles in biopsied lung tissue from three diverse human subject groups using field emission scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive analyzer. This library of phase spectra is provided to show the typical energy dispersive spectrum of the inorganic particulate matter identified in lung biopsy sections.
We developed and tested a new method for in situ characterization and distribution of inorganic particles in biopsied lung tissue from three diverse human subject groups using field emission scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive analyzer. The following .csv files summarize the inorganic particle identifications made in each frame of each area for each subject in the study. The In_Situ_Frame_Summary_2016-09-09_NJH***.csv is a tabulation of the phases identified in each frame. The In Situ Area Summary_2016-09-09.csv totals the number of times each phase was identified in an area of the lung tissue biopsy for each subject from the In_Situ_Frame_Summary_2016-09-09_NJH***.csv. The In Situ Subject Summary_2016-09-09.csv...
Sample Analyses: Thin sections made at UC Berkeley were brought to the USGS, Menlo Park, CA and were coated with 25 nm carbon. Samples were analyzed at the USGS in Menlo Park, CA in a Tescan VEGA3 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) equipped with an Oxford 50 mm2 X-MaxN energy dispersive spectrometer. Thin sections were imaged with backscatter electrons. Database Contents: The data files for “SEM Images of Sinter Thin Sections” contain representative SEM images of thin sections of samples UGB-TD-24, -27, -28, -29, -31, -32.
Sample Analyses: Unpolished bulk centimeter-scale sinter sub-samples were affixed to aluminum stubs using amorphous carbon paste and coated with 10 nm Au-Pd. Samples were analyzed at the USGS in Menlo Park, CA in a Tescan VEGA3 Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Stub-mount samples were imaged with secondary electrons. Database Contents: The data files for “SEM Images of Bulk Sinter Samples” contain representative SEM images of cm-size pieces of sub-samples UGB-TD-25, -26, -28, -30, -31, -33, -35.
Energy dispersive spectra of particulate matter in lung tissue from brush mouse, deer mice, and pocket gophers.
Small mammal lung tissue sections were examined to help assess the effects of weathering on bioavailability and toxicity from sites in different phases of the mine cycle within the Grand Canyon area. Hematoxylin and eosin slides of lung tissue from brush mouse, deer mice, and pocket gophers were examined by a veterinary pathologist who marked areas of the tissue that showed normal, inflammation, bronchiolar hyperplasia, mineralization, intracellular refractile debris, macrophages, and parasitic pathology. These selected areas were examined with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy to determine the size and composition of particulate matter, if present, in these areas.

Samples were analyzed using the handheld portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyzer as part of a study examining the occurrence chromium and of natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). Relative concentrations for 18 elements of interest were measured on the less than 2mm and sized- fraction splits of the 36 field samples. Greater than 20 percent of the samples analyzed using pXRF also have Contract Laboratory results for comparison. These pXRF results are part of...

We developed and tested a new method for in situ characterization and distribution of inorganic particles in biopsied lung tissue from three diverse human subject groups using field emission scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive analyzer. Secondary and backscattered electron images were acquired to document the size and location of inorganic particulate matter in areas of lung tissue biopsy sections.
