Between September and November each year, nearly the entire world population of Pacific black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) stages at Izembek Lagoon and surrounding estuaries (hereafter: Izembek Complex). The Izembek Complex is a unique area of protected brackish waters, supporting one of the world’s largest eelgrass beds and a diverse array of wildlife. The Alaska Fall Brant Survey has been conducted annually since 1976 in late-September through October, to provide an index of abundance for the entire post-breeding Pacific black brant population (Branta bernicla nigricans), while secondarily, providing annual fall population indices for cackling geese (Branta hutchinsii), emperor geese (Anser canagicus), and...

Collection of photographs taken during PRISM field work on the Yukon Delta. Photos include those taken of habitat within rapid survey plots (usually taken at the northwest corner of the rapid survey plot boundary), other photos taken within survey plots, completed datasheets, and by crew members.Directories include YKD_PRISM_plot_photos, YKD_PRISM_datasheet_photos, YKD_PRISM_other_plot_photos, and YKD_PRISM_crew_photos.A portion of these data are available on ServCat (https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/57583).Much of these data have been published in Lyons, J.E., S.C. Brown, S.T. Saalfeld, J.A. Johnson, B.A. Andres, K.M. Sowl, R.E. Gill, Jr., B.J. McCaffery, L.R. Kidd, M. McGarvey, B. Winn, H.R. Gates,...

Shorebirds are among the most rapidly declining species in North America (Rosenberg et al. 2019), with many long-distance migrants experiencing the greatest declines (Environment Canada 2020). Nonetheless, not all shorebirds are declining and there may be differences among species and populations using different migratory routes. For instance, previous meta-analyses have suggested that shorebirds using the Mid-Continental Flyway are experiencing more rapid declines than those using the Pacific or Atlantic flyways (Thomas et al. 2006). At the same time, within a species, more northerly breeding populations are experiencing greater phenological mismatches and lower reproductive success than southerly ones (Kwon et...

A combination of altered fire regimes and pathogens has contributed towards densification and encroachment by shade-tolerant species into areas traditionally dominated by whitebark pine. As such, the CMP Hi5 Working Group technical team suggest canopy cover as a proxy for species encroachment. Stands with tree cover greater than 60% suggest successional species are outcompeting whitebark pine.

Purpose: The 2023 Landscape Conservation Collaborative Inventory for the Pacific Northwest presents a consolidated overview of landscape conservation collaboratives across British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. This database delineates collaborative efforts, their objectives, and key stakeholders. The primary objective is to promote transparency, foster collaboration, and amplify the impact of conservation initiatives, thereby contributing to the responsible management and preservation of the Pacific Northwest’s natural resources and ecosystems. Designed for individuals involved in organizing, coordinating, or participating in landscape conservation initiatives within the Pacific Northwest, this inventory is...

This is a comma delimited text file of the bird observations for the Arctic Coastal Plain survey. These observations have undergone an extensive quality control process that is ongoing and corrected several errors in the source data. Point observation of birds are given in coordinate reference system EPSG:4326 and are accurate only to +/- 500m. The field "Year" gives the calendar year that the survey was flown, "Stratum" gives the transect density strata name, "NavTransect" gives the transect identifier used for navigation by the pilot (this is not necessarily the same as the design transect), and "Obs_Type" is the social group (single, pair, etc.) of the bird observation, "Num" is the number of observation of...

This file contains information pertaining to the survey plot including date and time of surveyed, survey conditions, plot location, and ecological and biological conditions of the survey plot. The data providers have invested considerable effort in QA/QC, but it is possible that undetected errors remain. It is strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the contents of the metadata file associated with these data to evaluate data set limitations, restrictions or intended use. The originators of this dataset shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described and/or contained herein. Potential users of these data should first contact the data authors listed below, as potential...

The SeaDuckDetectoR is software designed to identify sea ducks and other avian species in aerial photographs. The program is run through R and RStudio. The product includes a .zip file “SeaDuckDetectoR.0.1.0.zip” with the files for installation, and a manual “SeaDuckDetectoR_Manual.docx” explaining how to run the program.

Linkage Networks’ Synthesis Analysis The focal species and landscape integrity approaches identify habitat concentration areas (HCAs) and core habitats, respectively, and areas of the landscape important for connecting them. As in the Statewide Analysis and the Analysis of the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion (WHCWG, 2010, 2012), we consider that a linkage network consists of the combination of all the HCAs and the linkages modeled for a particular focal species, or core areas and modeled linkages for landscape integrity (WHCWG, 2010). These networks are useful individually, informing decisions pertaining to maintaining and restoring connectivity for the particular focal species (or species considered similar enough in...
Cropland conversion is anticipated to continue westward from the Great Plains into the sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) biome – the most intact biome remaining in the conterminous United States. However, relatively little is known about the extent and risk of cropland conversion to sagebrush ecosystems and the landscape scale benefits of easements in averting loss of ecological function. Therefore, our goals were to 1) quantify the cropland area of the sagebrush biome, 2) identify where the highest quality sagebrush rangelands are most at risk to future cropland conversion, and 3) estimate the ecological benefits of conservation easements to adjacent public lands. We found that croplands span 14.4 million ha in the sagebrush...

This dataset includes a polygon vector shapefile illustrating the location of rapid and intensive survey plots surveyed on the Yukon Delta as part of the Program for Regional and International Shorebird Monitoring (PRISM). This dataset provides the geographical location of survey plots that can be linked to the data collected in the field via the PlotID field.A portion of these data are available on ServCat (https://ecos.fws.gov/ServCat/Reference/Profile/57583).Much of these data have been published in Lyons, J.E., S.C. These catalogs serve to identify known locations of mineral extraction and exploration activities discussed for the purpose of eventually discovering these data through the Mines web map application. These tables of information will reduce data entry time through use of queries to generate records. They also help identify properties without a clear location for efficient discussion with the original authors.

Formed in 2007, the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group (WWHCWG) is an open collaborative science-based effort to produce tools and analyses that identify opportunities and priorities to provide habitat connectivity in Washington and surrounding habitats (https://waconnected.org). The WWHCWG began with a Statewide Habitat Connectivity Analysis, which highlighted several regions of the state that would benefit from finer-scale analyses. The group has since conducted analyses across many of those regions. The US Fish and Wildlife Service provided funding to develop habitat connectivity models for one of the remaining regions–Washington’s Cascades to Coast region. The goal of this project was to...
