This dataset includes the magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in 2003 along a north-south profile west of Tooele, Utah. It is important to know whether major mining districts in the Northern Nevada Gold Province are underlain by rocks of the Archean Wyoming craton, which are known to contain orogenic gold deposits, or by accreted rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Mojave province. It is also important to know the location and orientation of the Archean/Proterozoic suture zone between these provinces as well as major basement structures within these terranes because they may influence subsequent patterns of sedimentation, deformation, magmatism, and hydrothermal activity. This study was funded by the U.S. Geological...

A physiographically prominent, approximately 40 square km plateau lies roughly 20 km east of Mount Spurr volcano, northwestern Cook Inlet region, Alaska, and comprises the preserved remnant of a volcaniclastic succession, designated in this study as map unit Qvc. Although this readily mappable package of volcaniclastic rocks has been recognized in numerous studies during the past five decades, uncertainties regarding its age and origin have persisted. We describe the general characteristics of the volcaniclastic plateau, provide new age constraints for deposits, present lithofacies descriptions and interpretations of the volcaniclastic strata, and synthesize our observations and lithofacies analysis to propose an...

This dataset depicts relative erosion rate derived for all land draining above the Mesoamerican reef. It is a function of slope, land cover type, precipitation and soil type. The indicators developed by the Reefs at Risk in the Caribbean project enable detailed comparative analyses of threats on many scales. The Reefs at Risk indicators are a simplification of human activities and complex natural processes. This data set was derived at the World Resources Institute for input to the sedimentation and pollution from watershed based sources threat analysis. Agriculture, though important to economic development and food security, is a source of increased sediment, nutrient, and pesticide runoff. Threats from sedimentation...

Using basins derived from a hydrologically-corrected 30m resolution DEM as a unit for summary statistics, we provide a series of indicators focused on land-based sources of threat within the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. This includes indicators of a) the relative vulnerability of the land to erosion (based on slope, precipitation and soil erodibility); b) the relative erosion potential (REP) of the land, based on the relative vulnerability of the land, coupled with the current land cover type; c) the sediment delivery rate for each basin (percentage of eroded which reaches the river mouth); d) estimated sediment delivery for the basin, given current land use;

This feature contains a spatial representation of streams and stream segments with water quality information from Oregon’s 2010 Integrated Report Assessment Database and 303(d) List as approved by EPA on March 15, 2012. This feature should be used in conjunction with the feature ORLakesWaterQuality_2010. A water body may have assessment information for multiple pollutants or conditions, and may have multiple data records associated with the spatial representation of the water body or segment of the water body. Oregon’s 2010 Integrated Report Assessment Database and 303(d) List are available on-line at http://www.deq.state.or.us/wq/assessment/rpt2010/search.asp. The on-line searchable database should be used...
Implementation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP) has resulted in the restoration of >2 million ha of wetland and grassland habitats in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR). Restoration of habitats through these programs provides diverse ecosystem services to society, but few investigators have evaluated the environmental benefits achieved by these programs. We describe changes in wetland processes, functions, and ecosystem services that occur when wetlands and adjacent uplands on agricultural lands are restored through Farm Bill conservation programs. At the scale of wetland catchments, projects have had positive impacts on water storage,...

To capture cumulative threat in a given location, the four threats in the Reefs at Risk Caribbean analysis - coastal development, marine-based, sedimentation and overfishing - were integrated into a single index - the Reefs at Risk Threat Index.

This dataset includes the audio-magnetotelluric (AMT) sounding data collected in 2009 in and near the San Luis Basin, New Mexico. The U.S. Geological Survey conducted a series of multidisciplinary studies, including AMT surveys, in the San Luis Basin to improve understanding of the hydrogeology of the Santa Fe Group and the nature of the sedimentary deposits comprising the principal groundwater aquifers of the Rio Grande rift. The shallow unconfined and the deeper confined Santa Fe Group aquifers in the San Luis Basin are the main sources of municipal water for the region. The population of the San Luis Basin region is growing rapidly and water shortfalls could have serious consequences. Future growth and land management...

These topographic/bathymetric digital elevation models (DEMs) were collected and compiled to characterize erosion and deposition in the Colorado River and in an adjacent zone of laterally recirculating flow (eddy) during both average flow conditions and during a controlled flood that occurred in March 2008. The objectives of the study were to measure changes sandbar morphology that occurred during changes in discharge associated with the controlled flood. These data were collected between February 6 and March 31, 2008 in a 1-mile study reach on the Colorado River within Grand Canyon National Park beginning 44.5 miles downstream from Lees Ferry, Arizona. These data were collected by the USGS Grand Canyon Monitoring...

This data release contains three spreadsheets that have aluminum-26 and beryllium-10 concentrations for samples collected in and near Sparta, North Carolina in 2021-2022. These samples were prepared for burial dating by the Reston Cosmogenic Nuclide (RECON) Lab and measured via accelerator mass spectrometry at the Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement (PRIME) Lab. The file “Sparta_SiteLocations_Odom.csv” contains site locations and interpreted ages; measurements of aluminum-26 and beryllium-10 and related data are located in respective .csv files.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta of Alaska is a globally important region for numerousavian species including millions of migrating and nesting waterbirds. Climate change effectssuch as sea level rise and increased storm frequency and intensity have the potential to impactwaterbird populations and breeding habitat. In order to determine the potential impacts of theseclimate-mediated changes, we investigated both short-term and long-term impacts of stormsurges to geese and eider species that commonly breed on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Todetermine short-term impacts, we compared nest densities of geese and eiders in relation to themagnitude of storms that occurred in the prior fall from 2000–2013. Additionally, we modeledgeese...

This project evaluated the potential impacts of storm surges and relative sea level rise on nesting geese and eider species that commonly breed on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (Y-K Delta). Habitat suitability maps for breeding waterbirds were developed to identify current waterbird breeding habitat and distributions. Short-term climate change impacts were assessed by comparing nest densities in relation to magnitude of storms that occurred in the prior fall from 2000-2013. Additionally, nest densities were modeled using random forests in relation to the time-integrated flood index (e.g., a storm specific measure accounting for both water depth and duration of flooding) for four modeled storms (2005, 2006, 2009, and...

This project resulted in an extensive mapping of coastal change along the entire coastline of the Western Alaska Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC). The work provides important baseline information on the distribution and magnitude of landscape changes over the past 41 years. The extent of change to the coastline and to coastal features, such as spits, barrier islands, estuaries, tidal guts and lagoons, was known to be substantial in some areas along the coast (e.g., portions of the Yukon–Kuskokwim Delta), although the extent of change along the full Bering Sea coast was not well documented. With this analysis, changes can be summarized for different land ownerships or other units to assess the extent of recent...
