A physiographically prominent, approximately 40 square km plateau lies roughly 20 km east of Mount Spurr volcano, northwestern Cook Inlet region, Alaska, and comprises the preserved remnant of a volcaniclastic succession, designated in this study as map unit Qvc. Although this readily mappable package of volcaniclastic rocks has been recognized in numerous studies during the past five decades, uncertainties regarding its age and origin have persisted. We describe the general characteristics of the volcaniclastic plateau, provide new age constraints for deposits, present lithofacies descriptions and interpretations of the volcaniclastic strata, and synthesize our observations and lithofacies analysis to propose an...

In settings where the transport of sand is partially or fully supply limited, changes in the upstream supply of sand are coupled to changes in the grain size of sand on the bed. In this manner, the transport of sand under the supply-limited case is 'grain-size regulated'. Since the closure of Glen Canyon Dam in 1963, the downstream reach of the Colorado River in Marble and Grand Canyons has exhibited evidence of sand-supply limitation. Sand transport in the river is now approximately equally regulated by changes in the discharge of water and changes in the grain sizes of sand on the channel bed and eddy sandbars. Previous work has shown that changes in the grain size of sand on the bed of the channel (driven by...

The effects of wave action and horseshoe crab spawning on the topography and grain-size characteristics on the foreshore of an estuarine sand beach in Delaware Bay, New Jersey, USA were evaluated using data collected over six consecutive high tides. Data were gathered inside and outside a 25 m long exclosure constructed to create a control area free of disturbance by crabs. The density of crabs in the swash zone outside the exclosure was 8??1 organisms m-2. The maximum depth of sediment activation on the upper foreshore where spawning occurred was 0??103 m during periods characterized by low significant wave heights: < 0??08 m. This depth is greater than the depth of activation by waves alone during moderate significant...

The San Juan Generating Station in Waterflow, NM, owned by the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) is a coal-fired power plant that operates on coal mined on the same property. This plant is scheduled to shut down in 2022. In light of this impending closure, the Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) is interested in purchasing the plant's raw-water reservoir for use in the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project (NGWSP). Concerns about contamination leaking from the reservoir or being mobilized by groundwater flow affected by the leaking reservoir have resulted in Reclamation eliciting a short study of the water and sediment chemistry surrounding the reservoir and the recovery system set up by PNM. The U.S. Geological...

Variability in sediment properties with depth and the thickness of individual sedimentary layers are critical determinants of seabed acoustic response. The New England Mud Patch (NEMP), located south of Cape Cod, is an unusual feature on the U.S. Continental Shelf in that it is composed of fine-grained sediment layers containing a relatively-homogeneous mix of sand, silt, and clay-sized particles bounded by more typical sandy shelf sediments. The unique characteristics and nature of this deposit is due to a derivation of sediments that have been transported to, and deposited in, a basal bowl-shaped depression since the last glacial maximum. Ninety-two piston, vibra-, and gravity cores with a maximum length of 8.2...
During the winter of 2016 and the summer of 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center collected sediment cores for grain-size analysis in Mississippi and Arkansas. In a farm field adjacent to the Tallahatchie River near Money, Mississippi, 13 continuous sections of approximately 5-cm (2-in) diameter by approximately 1.5-m (5-ft) long sediment cores were extracted to better understand the sediment within the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. These data were used to support ongoing aquifer testing activities by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service. Lake Poinsett Dam is an earthen embankment dam located near Harrisburg, AR. In May of 2018, the...

These data were collected from the TOPGUN-SODA10 2AK core collected in 2010 by LacCore (University of Minnesota), the USGS. and the University of California (U.C.) Berkeley. The 8.9 meter length core had stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon sampled every 10 millimeters or so, and diatoms samples at every 50 millimeters to 200 millimeters depending on the depth in the core. mineralogic data were collected using X-ray diffraction and grain-size analysis were done at various depths. These data are used to interpret the Holocene and late Pleistocene hydrology and paleoclimate of the lake and the region. The interpretation can be found in: Rosen, M.R., Reidy, L., Starratt, S., Zimmerman, S., in review, Middle Holocene...

A series of simple linear regression models were developed for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamgage at Rice Creek below Highway 8 in Mounds View, Minnesota (USGS station number 05288580). The simple linear regression models were calibrated using streamflow data to estimate suspended-sediment (total, fines, and sands) and bedload. Data were collected during water years 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018, and 2019. The estimates from the simple linear regressions were used to calculate loads for water years 2010 through 2019. The calibrated simple linear regression models were used to improve understanding of sediment transport processes and increase accuracy of estimating sediment and loads for Rice Creek. Two multidimensional...

From 2008 to 2012, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District, developed an acoustic backscatter surrogate (model 1.0) for estimating real-time suspended-sediment concentration and loads at Clearwater River at Spalding, ID (USGS ID: 13342500) using a horizontally-mounted 3000kHz acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADVM). This study is a continuation of the 2008 to 2012 acoustic backscatter surrogate study using samples collected since 2015 to validate the continued use of model 1.0. Sample data collected in 2015 to 2018 show a deviation from model 1.0 when backscatter data from the ADVM, after correction for acoustic losses, is greater than 65.7 decibels....

The Mississippi Coastal Improvements Program (MsCIP) has developed a Comprehensive Barrier Island Restoration Plan containing options to ensure the integrity of the Mississippi barrier islands through restoration efforts. Any restoration activities implemented must have minimal adverse impacts to critical habitat for various marine, terrestrial and avian resources. Documenting the success of restoration activities in meeting this requirement requires habitat monitoring. In recent communications with MsCIP personnel, the MsCIP lacks a remotely sensed component to its habitat monitoring plan. Additionally, MsCIP personnel have expressed a need for data pertaining to critical habitat utilized by species of interest...
