In May 2015, we acquired high-resolution seismic profiles near six strong motion instruments located in Napa and Solano Counties, California. These strong motion instruments recorded horizontal peak accelerations (PGAs) from 0.329g to 0.611g, which were among the highest recorded in the Napa area during the 24 August 2014 Mw 6.0 South Napa Earthquake. Our goal is to measure the seismic velocities of the underlying geologic material at each strong motion site using P- and S-wave refraction tomography and analysis of surface waves, especially in the upper 30 m of the subsurface.
This product is a collection of digital data that document fault rupture and ground deformation produced by the August 24, 2014 South Napa Earthquake. These datasets are described and more fully discussed in Ponti, D.J, Rosa, C.M, and Blair, J.L., 2019, The Mw 6.0 South Napa Earthquake of August 24, 2014—Observations of surface faulting and ground deformation, with recommendations for improving post-earthquake field investigations: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2019–1018, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20191018. Included in this collection are: 1) Hillshade images that depict fault rupture, in GeoTIFF format derived from hi-resolution airborne lidar data flown on Sept. 9, 2014; 2) GIS Shapefile and KMZ...

We present a preliminary point inventory of the landslides associated with the M7.2 Nippes, Haiti, earthquake that occurred on August 14, 2021. The mapping was part of rapid response efforts to identify hazards for situational awareness and emergency response by humanitarian aid organizations. This inventory accompanies an Open-File Report detailing the hazards presented by the landslides triggered by the earthquake (Martinez et al., 2021). To map the landslides, we used mid- to high-resolution satellite imagery including Sentinel-2 (10-m resolution), WorldView (0.3-0.5-m resolution), Planet (2.7-4.0-m resolution), as well as a high-resolution (1.5 m) Digital Elevation Model (DEM) that was derived from lidar collected...
We performed laboratory time-dependent creep and stress-oscillation earthquake simulations in uniaxial loading in compression and tension on four blocks of porphyritic dacite collected from pyroclastic deposits of Mt. Fugen, of the Unzen-dake volcanic complex in Japan (referred to as ‘Unzen volcano’). Experiments were carried out in the Experimental Volcanology and Geothermal Research Laboratory at the University of Liverpool. Loading experiments were carried out in a 100 kN Instron 8800 uniaxial press at room temperature using both compression tests, and Brazilian disk tests to provide the indirect tensile strength (hereafter referred to as tensile strength/tension tests). Load was recorded by an Instron Dynacell...
Seismicity catalogs, gridded seismic hazard curve data, gridded ground motion data, and mapped gridded ground motion values are available for the 1996 National Seismic Hazard Model for the Conterminous U.S. Seismicity catalogs are available for the western U.S. (in Mw) and central and eastern U.S. (in mb). Probabilistic seismic hazard data and maps of the conterminous U.S. for peak ground acceleration (PGA) and 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 second spectral acceleration at probability levels of 2 percent in 50 years (annual probability of 0.000404), 5 percent in 50 years (annual probability of 0.001026), and 10 percent in 50 years (annual probability of 0.0021), assuming firm rock soil conditions at 760 m/s, are...
The Atlas of ShakeMaps (~14,100 earthquakes, 1900-2020) provides a consistent and quantitative description of the distribution of shaking intensity for calibrating earthquake loss estimation methodologies, like those used in the USGS Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) system. Version 4 of the Atlas includes a vastly expanded compilation of ShakeMaps for consequential and widely felt earthquakes using updated ShakeMap (Version 4) software. For each event, we have attempted to gather available macroseismic, recorded ground motions and finite fault inputs. AtlasCat is the companion catalog to Atlas V4. For each event in the Atlas, AtlasCat contains population exposure to each intensity level,...

High-resolution multichannel minisparker seismic-reflection and chirp sub-bottom data were collected by the U.S. Geological Survey in July of 2018 between Point Conception and Coal Oil Point in the Santa Barbara Channel, California. Data were collected aboard the USGS R/V Parke Snavely during field activity 2018-645-FA. Data were acquired to support the USGS geologic hazards projects to aide hazard assessment of shallow faulting, slope stability, and submarine landslides along the western Santa Barbara Channel. These data and information are intended for science researchers, students from elementary through college, policy makers, and general public.
This dataset consists of the processed ground motions from 96 earthquake rupture scenarios for M7 earthquakes on the Salt Lake City segment of the Wasatch fault. Details about the simulation method, ground motion variability and sensitivity of the ground motions to the kinematic rupture parameters are described in the accompanying manuscript. Simulated data is distributed as 5-percent damped response spectral accelerations that support the conclusions of the accompanying manuscript.

The dataset is consisted of travel-time records (vs30data.SCE.FINAL01_DATA.zip) in SEG2 format recorded using multi-station arrays near 6 seismographic stations located in southern California. A table in the spreadsheet (vs30data.SCE.FINAL01.xlsx) summarizes the data collection. Included in the dataset are figures showing incremental results supporting the resultant modeled shear-wave velocity (Vs) profile and estimated time-averaged Vs in the upper 30 m of the subsurface (Vs30). Incremental results include plots of the picks of fundamental mode dispersion curve, the modeled Vs profile and estimated Vs30, and the empirical and theoretical dispersion curves.

This dataset consists of tabular information from coastal studies of earthquake and tsunami history along a central part of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The study area encompasses four estuaries along the Pacific coast of southern Washington and northernmost Oregon. Nearly all the field work took place between 1986 and 1998. Data tables, 18 in all, archive mostly georeferenced information about stratigraphy, radiocarbon ages, and trees dead and living. Some of this data was interpreted in reports published between 1987 and 2005, but most of it was previously unavailable. An accompanying guide, with hyperlinks to the data tables, explains the data tables more thoroughly than does the metadata. Contributors include...
