Description of Work Benthos (benthic invertebrate) and plankton (phytoplankton/zooplankton) communities in Wisconsin's four Lake Michigan Areas of Concern (AOCs; Menominee River, Lower Green Bay and Fox River, Sheboygan River, and Milwaukee Estuary) and six non-AOCs will be quantified. The inclusion of non-AOC sites will allow comparison of AOC sites to relatively-unimpacted or less-impacted control sites with natural physical and chemical characteristics that are as close as possible to that of the AOCs. The community data within and between the AOCs and non-AOCs will be analyzed. This project is a cooperative agreement between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and the US Geological Survey (USGS)....
This data set is a compilation of data from two sampling efforts (2010 and 2014), focused on determining the presence and distribution of organic contaminants throughout the United States portion of the Great Lakes watershed. Water-borne contaminants were monitored in 69 tributaries of the Great Lakes using semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs), and polar organic chemical integrative samplers (POCIS). Analyses included 185 chemicals (143 detected) including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), legacy and current-use pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and organophosphate fire retardants, pharmaceuticals, fragrances, industrial chemicals, surfactants, and others.

Streambed sediment samples were collected in October 2016 from streams tributary to Wisconsin’s western Lake Michigan shoreline. Streams included two Areas of Concern (AOCs), two non-AOC comparisons, and two additional non-AOC study areas. Within the Milwaukee Estuary AOC, samples were collected from the Milwaukee River (three subsites), the Menomonee River (two subsites), the Kinnickinnic River (2 subsites), and the Milwaukee Harbor (one subsite). The Milwaukee, Menomonee, and Kinnickinnic Rivers converge in the Milwaukee Harbor and then discharge to Lake Michigan. Within the Sheboygan River AOC, samples were collected at three subsites. Samples were also collected at two subsites in the Manitowoc River and two...

In 2011-12, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted a study of the and hydrogeomorphic history and hydrodynamic characteristics of the lower 5 kilometers of the Sheboygan River, a tributary to Lake Michigan in eastern Wisconsin. The hydrogeomorphic history and stability of an ecologically important island complex in the Sheboygan River, the Wildwood Islands, was studied to determine the potential effects of inundation of island surfaces on riparian vegetation and potential areas of erosion and deposition. A two-dimensional (2D) channel hydraulics model was developed for simulating the interaction of riverine flows with varying lake levels and seiche effects. This dataset contains model input and output associated with...

Data are for zooplankton communities sampled in 2016 at the Sheboygan River Area of Concern and two comparison sites, the Kewaunee River and the Manitowoc River, which have similar physical and chemical characteristics. Zooplankton were collected by using tows from depth to the surface with a 63 micrometer mesh plankton net. Physical and chemical data that were sampled concurrently (specific conductance, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen) in water by use of a multi-parameter water-quality sonde, and the results of field quality assurance quality control are also included.
