The Physical Shore-Zone Mapping System is a scheme designed for the classification of the materials, forms and processes that occur or operate along the coast of British Columbia. It has been specifically developed to provide an inventory of the physical character of the shore-zone and to show their distribution, extent ad location. The system is scale independent and provides base data applicable for a wide range of natural resource applications including planning, management, impact assessment and oil spill response.

This data set was compiled by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) for the Coastal Information Team (CIT). This is a compilation of six data project regions from the Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management (MSRM). The major CAVEAUT of these data is that the original data sets was delivered to the CIT in draft form and therefore contain incomplete spatial accuracy and attribution. There is a shift from true BC Albers projection that range from 40 to 80 meters depending on the particular part of the coastline. This is because each data project region by MSRM used different shoreline files. In their finalization of these data all spatial and attribute information will be corrected.
