Album caption: Thermal infrared images of Mount St. Helens obtained prior to 1980 eruption sequence, showing the two historic thermal areas. Image shows thermal area A, a small area of weak fumarolic activity at The Boot, on north flank at 2,740 m (9,000 ft) elevation. On this late-summer morning, instruments were set to depict two levels of background heat emission - glaciers and few remaining snow patches as cold, and snow-free ground as warm. Skamania County, Washington. August 7, 1971. Published as figure 147-A in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional paper 1250. 1981. Index card unavailable.

Temperature of sample when collected was 260°C. Unidentified acicular mineral contains sodium and magnesium. Skamania County, Washington. October 15, 1980. Published as figure 385-B in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional paper 1250. 1981. Handwritten notes on album caption: (Photo by D.R. Pevear) Index card unavailable.

Aerial view looking east across the thickest part of the debris avalanche deposit in the North Fork Toutle River. This location is about 1 mile downstream from Spirit Lake. Skamania County, Washington. May 23, 1980. Figure 4 in U.S. Geological Survey. Circular 850-B. 1981.

Album caption: Computer-generated shaded-relief images of filtered digital terrain models of Mount St. Helens. Data were filtered by averaging pixel values over 3 x 3 areas. Increased uncertainty of contour location within snowfields appears as terraces (in southeast) and crevasses (in northwest). B. Model from photographs of May 12 and 16, 1980. Small discontinuity just south of Dogs Head is an artifact of the join between May 12 and day 16 digital terrain models. Skamania County, Washington. May 16, 1980. Published as figure 79-B in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional paper 1250. 1981. Index card unavailable.

Slide description and index card: Aerial views of the Mount St. Helens crater and eruptions from the north and northwest. C, These phreatic eruptions seemed to grow in slow motion because of the immensity of the scene. Some were powerful enough to throw out automibile-sized blocks of rock and ice. Skamania County, Washington. April 10, 1980. (Photo by John Whetten). Published as Figure 14-C in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional Paper 1249. 1982.

Album caption: Thermal infrared images of Mount St. Helens summit area obtained by U.S. Army at approximately 2300 on March 30, 1980. Thermal feature E is a topographic prominence and may result from solar heating. There are large-scale distortions in these images. B. View of upper north flank showing heating within major fractures near The Boot (fracture D and fracture through area A). In this image, observations near The Boot were approximately perpendicular to the local surface. Skamania County, Washington. March 30, 1980. (Indicator lines, arrow and letters on published photo only) Portion published as figure 151-B in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional paper 1250. 1981. Index card unavailable.

Slide description and index card: Aerial view of the Mount St. Helens crater and eruptions from the north and northwest. E, By April 10, eruptions were coming from a single circular vent (shown by an arrow on published photo only) in the lowest part of the crater and almost directly below the position of the crater first seen on March 29. Traces of what probably was another, but now-dormant, vent can be seen to the right of the active vent, here steaming weakly. The active vent was about 30 feet across. Skamania County, Washington. April 10, 1980. (Photo by John Whetten). Published as Figure 14-E in U.S. Geological Survey. Professional Paper 1249. 1982.

Index card: View looking upstream at the Smith Creek drainage basin. Smith Creek, a tributary to Muddy River, was inundated by several feet of mud, and phreatic eruptions can be seen occurring through the mudflow. Note the trees stripped from the hills and fires burning on the hills; also the deposit of trees on and through the mudflow. On the left of the slide you can see water beginning to flow over the surface of the newly deposited mudflow. Skamania County, Washington. May 19, 1980.

Album caption: Aerial view of crater rim following the May 18 eruption. Arrows above the far rim indicate exposed cross sections (left to right) of Forsyth, Nelson, Ape, and Shoestring Glaciers. The horizontal arrow on the near slope indicates typical rills and channels through ash deposits into Talus Glacier (note crevasse further down the glacier). Dark (wet) streaks to the left indicate the ash-covered Toutle Glacier. Mount St. Helens. Skamania County, Washington. July 24, 1980. Slide description and index card: Aerial view of the Mount St. Helens crater and eruptions from the north and northwest. A, The oblong crater, enlarged since the merging of two smaller pits, continued to grow with the repeated eruptions and avalanches from the crater walls. The summit graben had slumped noticeably since March 30, as the prominent offset (scarp) along the major crack (fault) on the southern side (back) of the crater shows. Skamania County, Washington.
