These data were compiled here to fit various versions of Bayesian population models and compare their performance, primarily the time required to make inferences using different softwares and versions of code. The humpback chub data were collected by US Geological Survey and US Fish and Wildlife service in the Colorado and Little Colorado Rivers from April 2009 to October 2017. Adult fish were captured using hoop nets and electro-fishing, measured for total length and given individual marks using passive integrated transponders that were scanned when fish were recaptured. The other three datasets were collected by US Forest Service. Owl data for the N-occupancy model was collected between 1990 and 2015. Owl data...

The Transboundary Madrean Watersheds Landscape Conservation Design (LCD) was developed as part of an effort initiated by the Desert Landscape Conservation Cooperative (Desert LCC). The Desert LCC was a program of the Bureau of Reclamation and the US Fish and Wildlife Service to address large-scale landscape conservation in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. This collaborative effort brought together managers, stakeholders, communities, and others to work toward sustaining resilient landscapes capable of responding to environmental challenges and supporting natural and cultural values for current and future generations. The Madrean Watersheds LCD area spans the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Sonora,...

These data were compiled for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to assist them with updating the current status of the species Bartram's Stonecrop (Graptopetalum bartramii). Objective(s) of our study were to survey selected sites within the of Bartram's Stonecrop for future management and protection. These data represent summary population counts at selected known sites for the Federally listed Threatened plant species, Bartram's Stonecrop (Graptopetalum bartramii). These data were collected in the southern Arizona portion of the species' range, stratified across Sky Island Mountain ranges from the Rincon Mountains south to the Atascosa Highlands, just north of the Mexican border. Sites were selected to represent...

Executive summary: The avifauna within the Sky Islands of southeastern Arizona includes species found nowhere else in the U.S. Thus, birdwatchers from across the globe visit the region, providing a vibrant state and local ecotourism industry. RMRS scientists initiated a study in the 1990s on avian distribution and habitat associations within the Sky Islands. Since then, the region has been under increased stress from ongoing droughts and wildfires, likely associated with climate change. By re-measuring vegetation and bird populations in 2014 following wildfires and applying climate change models, we will assess the singular and synergistic effects of climate change and wildfire and provide strategies for managing...

Burn probability (BP) models involve the simulation of multiple individual wildfires across a landscape to obtain estimates of fire likelihood at any given location based on ignition source, local terrain, fuels and weather. We used FlamMap software to generate BP for 10,000 simulated fires under the three ignition scenarios: human ignition scenario (HIS), lightning ignition scenario (LIS) and random ignition scenario (RIS) for 13 sky island mountain ranges in Arizona. The zipped folder contains 42 BP models in geotiff format. The naming convention for each tiff is: mountain_range_name + scenario type (human, lightning, or random) + bp.
Aim Woody plants affect vegetation?environment interactions by modifying microclimate, soil moisture dynamics and carbon cycling. In examining broad-scale patterns in terrestrial vegetation dynamics, explicit consideration of variation in the amount of woody plant cover could provide additional explanatory power that might not be available when only considering landscape-scale climate patterns or specific vegetation assemblages. Here we evaluate the interactive influence of woody plant cover on remotely sensed vegetation dynamics across a climatic gradient along a sky island. Location The Santa Rita Mountains, Arizona, USA. Methods Using a satellite-measured normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from 2000...

Rocky Mountain Research Station scientists initiated a study in the 1990s on avian distribution and habitat associations within the Sky Islands. By re-measuring vegetation and bird populations following wildfires and applying climate change models, they will assess the singular and synergistic effects of climate change and wildfire and provide strategies for managing resilient forests and conserving the avian community structure. They will also continue and expand citizen science efforts to develop a long term avian monitoring plan, as well as simulation studies to provide optimal monitoring designs for avian species to detect changes from large-scale stressors.
