These data are a qualitatively derived interpretive polygon shapefile defining surficial sediment type and distribution, and geomorphology, for nearly 1,400 square kilometers of sea floor on the inner-continental shelf from Fenwick Island, Maryland to Fisherman’s Island, Virginia, USA. These data are classified according to Barnhardt and others (1998) bottom-type classification system, which was modified to highlight changes in secondary sediment-types such as mud and gravel across this primarily sandy shelf. Most of the geophysical and sample data used to create this interpretive layer were collected as part of the Linking Coastal Processes and Vulnerability: Assateague Island Regional Study project (GS2-2C), supported...

Geologic, sediment texture, and physiographic zone maps characterize the sea floor south and west of Martha's Vineyard and north of Nantucket, Massachusetts. These maps were derived from interpretations of seismic-reflection profiles, high-resolution bathymetry, acoustic-backscatter intensity, bottom photographs, and surficial sediment samples. The interpretation of the seismic stratigraphy and mapping of glacial and Holocene marine units provided a foundation on which the surficial maps were created. This mapping is a result of a collaborative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management to characterize the surface and subsurface geologic framework offshore of...

Note: This data release has been deprecated. Please see new data release here: https://doi.org/10.5066/P9A91W4Z This dataset provides numerical descriptions of 80 watershed characteristics for 1,703 watersheds with observed streamflow information at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) streamflow-gaging stations (gages). These gages are all located within the states of Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico (east of the continental divide), but the watersheds extend outside of these boundaries. Characteristics are indexed by National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) version 2.2.1 Permanent_Identifier (PERMID; string that uniquely identifies each feature in the NHD) and USGS identification number for streamflow-gaging station (gage)....

Chihuahuan Desert landscapes exemplify the ecological conditions, vulnerability, and management challenges in arid and semi-arid regions around the world. The goal of the Jornada Basin Long Term Ecological Research program (JRN LTER) established in 1982 is to understand and quantify the key factors and processes controlling ecosystem dynamics and patterns in Chihuahuan Desert landscapes. In collaboration with the Jornada Experimental Range (USDA ARS), studies initiated in 1915 have been incorporated into the JRN LTER program. Previous research focused on desertification, a state change from perennial grasslands to woody plant dominance that occurs globally. Based on findings from growing long-term databases, the...

Uncertainty of satellite discharge estimates is affected by choice of satellite sensor, hydraulic variable for observation, and discharge estimation algorithm, as well as the availability of ground-calibration data. Site selection is very important for reducing error and uncertainty in both conventional and satellite-based discharge measurements because geomorphic river characteristics have strong control over the relationships between discharge and depth, width, slope, and velocity. A ground-truth data set of 8,445 conventional hydraulic measurements, collected by acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) at 503 stations in the United States was developed to examine correlation between river discharge and river...

The Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GPLCC, https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog) is a partnership that provides applied science and decision support tools to assist natural resource managers conserve plants, fish and wildlife in the mid- and short-grass prairie of the southern Great Plains. It is part of a national network of public-private partnerships — known as Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs, http://www.fws.gov/science/shc/lcc.html) — that work collaboratively across jurisdictions and political boundaries to leverage resources and share science capacity. The Great Plains LCC identifies science priorities for the region and helps foster science that addresses these priorities to support...

slope
The slope dataset was derived from the National Elevation Dataset and resulted in a slope dataset that is of the same resolution as the 30 m land cover dataset. Slope was reported in degrees. Slope is defined as the ratio of the "rise" divided by the "run" between two points on a line, expressed in degrees. Slope was generated using ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, with the USGS National Elevation Dataset as input. For quality information regarding the National Elevation Dataset, see http://ned.usgs.gov/ These data cover the entire continental U.S. and are a continuous data layer. These raster data have a 30 m x 30 m cell resolution. This slope data set is considered official foundational data for the GAP species modeling...
