FY2011Research is showing that populations of wintering raptors, including Northern Harriers, Rough-Legged Hawks, Prairie Falcons, American Kestrels. Red-Tailed Hawks and Golden Eagles, have stayed relatively constant in the last 20 years are being used by the Bureau of Land Management and Idaho Army National Guard in developing raptor conservation management practices. The American Wind and WildlifeInstitute will also use the results for their wind energy siting support tools.

The introduction of exotic plant species into the western United States has caused substantial changes to rangeland disturbance regimes and ecosystem structure and function. For example, exotic annual grass (EAG) invasion in western rangelands has increased wildfire frequency, which greatly reduces rangeland ecosystem diversity and leads to single-species dominance in many areas. Rangeland monocultures do not provide optimal carbon sequestration and other environmental processes necessary to sustain historically normal ecosystem structure, including the ecological diversity needed to support sagebrush obligates like Greater Sagegrouse, pygmy rabbit, and pronghorn. These obligates, as well as others, require contiguous,...

This GIS dataset is the primary data product produced for the NW Climate Science Center-funded project, "Rangewide climate vulnerability assessment for threatened Bull Trout" (FRESC Study ID 851). We used predictions of temperatures in streams across approximately two-thirds of the species' range in the U.S. to map coldwater streams or “patches” suitable for spawning and early rearing of Bull Trout. Each patch consists of streams with contiguous reaches of cold water. Patches were delineated using medium resolution National Hydrography Dataset streams containing modeled temperatures available at 1 km intervals, as provided by the NorWeST project (http://www.fs.fed.us/rm/boise/AWAE/projects/NorWeST.html).Once the...

Field measurements of water depth were acquired from a reach of the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, WY, August 19-24, 2015, to support research on channel change along the Snake River and, more broadly, remote sensing of rivers. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the shallow channel margins and measuring the water depth directly on a top-setting wading rod used to collect flow velocity data with an acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). For the deeper areas representing most of the channel, depths were recorded along a series of cross-sections by a SonTek RiverSurveyor M9 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed from a kayak with the vertical beam of the...

This dataset includes field hydrologic measurements and laboratory analyses of surface and pore waters, sediments, benthic plants/biofilms, and biota along the Middle Snake River upgradient of the Hells Canyon Complex. The study region for this work focuses on a section of the Snake River heavily utilized for agriculture, with complex systems of irrigation diversion and return drainage, spanning 164 km above the Hells Canyon Complex (Idaho, Oregon). The goal of this study was to identify potential loading sources of methylmercury from the upgradient Snake River into the reservoir complex, with a focus on the tributaries, irrigation return drains, and riparian zones adjacent to agricultural lands along the river....

The main contents of this data release are estimates of daily and annual abundances of federally-threatened natural-origin age-0 fall Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) passing Lower Granite Dam, Washington. Fish from this population are sampled as they pass Lower Granite Dam, but these sample data cannot be used directly to infer abundance because capture probability at Lower Granite Dam varies throughout the migration and because of the contemporaneous presence of unmarked hatchery-origin fish which are visually indistinguishable from natural-origin fish. Estimates of abundance were obtained by fitting a statistical mark-recapture model that integrated four related datasets: 1) the release/recapture data...

Field spectra were collected from the Snake River in Grand Teton National Park, WY, August 23, 2015, to support research on remote sensing of rivers. Reflectance measurements were made from a raft in the Swallow Bend reach of the Snake River using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in reflectance mode. The depth at each spectral measurement location was interpolated from field measurements of depth obtained with an acoustic Doppler current profiler. This data release provides both the reflectance spectra and the interpolated depths and can be used to develop relationships between depth and reflectance for mapping river bathymetry from field spectra or passive optical remotely sensed...

This dataset describes biomass and methylmercury concentrations in zooplankton, other invertebrates, fish, and coarse and fine detritus samples collected at the outflow locations of Brownlee and Oxbow Reservoirs in the Snake River Hells Canyon Complex. Based on the sampling locations, the sampled materials were presumed to have flowed through the dam turbines or over the spillway, thereby representing biological export from the reservoirs. Samples were collected biweekly at each location over a sixteen-month period, June 2018 – September 2019. Sampling and analysis methods are described in the Processing Steps section of the metadata.

Model archive summary describing the development of an acoustic derived suspended sediment time series computation model. The model archive summary describes the methods and techniques used to develop the model for the Snake River at Weiser, ID – USGS site ID# 13269000. The model can be used to develop a time series of suspended sediment concentration based on acoustic backscatter and tributary flow data to determine the suspended sediment concentration at the site in real-time. The suspended sediment time series will help enable science entities, managers, and others, track the movement of sediment in the Snake River above Brownlee Reservoir.

The Hells Canyon Complex (HCC) is comprised of a series of three consecutive reservoirs (Brownlee, Oxbow, and Hells Canyon) along a 145 km reach of the Snake River bordered by Idaho to the east and Oregon to the west. Due to concerns regarding mercury (Hg) contamination within the HCC, in cooperation with Idaho Power Company, the U.S. Geological Survey has been leading an investigation into the sources, transport, microbial transformations, chemical speciation and bioaccumulation of Hg in this complex river-reservoir environment. This data release is focused on the sediment component of this larger effort and includes data collected between 2014 and 2018 from shallow surface sediment (≤ top 5 cm) and from sectioned...
