This dataset is comprised of three files containing northing, easting, and elevation ("XYZ") information for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data representing beach topography and sonar data representing near-shore bathymetry of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, Duluth, Minnesota. The point data is the same as that in LAS (industry-standard binary format for storing large point clouds) files that were used to create a digital elevation model (DEM) of the approximately 5.9 square kilometer (2.3 square mile) surveyed area. LiDAR data were collected August 10, 2019 using a boat-mounted Optech ILRIS scanner and methodology similar to that described by Huizinga and Wagner (2019). Multi-beam sonar data were collected...

This data release includes multispectral images and field measurements of water depth from the Sacramento River near Glenn, California, used to evaluate the potential for efficient reach-scale mapping of river bathymetry using Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS). The images were acquired by a MicaSense RedEdge-MX Dual Camera deployed from a Trinity F90 vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAS. The 4 km long study area along the Sacramento River was subdivided into three distinct but adjacent areas of interest (AOIs) and image data were collected from one AOI each day between September 14 and 16, 2021. The image data were ortho-rectified using Quantum-Systems QBase 3D and Agisoft Metashape software and saved as GeoTIFF...

A bathymetric survey of Nimrod Lake, Arkansas, was conducted in late April to mid-May, 2016, by the Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center (LMG WSC) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) using methodologies for sonar surveys similar to those described by Wilson and Richards (2006) and Richards and Huizinga (2018). Point data from the bathymetric survey were merged with point data from an aerial LiDAR survey conducted in December, 2010, that were provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Little Rock District. From the combined point dataset, a terrain dataset (a type of triangulated irregular network, or TIN, model) was created in Esri ArcGIS, version 10.5, for the area within the approximate extent...

The dataset is a digital elevation model (DEM), in GeoTiff format, of the bathymetry of Dierks Lake, Howard and Sevier Counties, Arkansas. The extent of the DEM represents the area encompassing the extent of the aerial Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) data used in the project. Horizontal and vertical units are expressed in meters. The DEM was derived from an LAS dataset (an industry-standard binary format for storing aerial LiDAR data) created from point datasets stored in “Dierks2018_gdb”. The point datasets include aerial LiDAR data from a survey conducted in 2016 by the National Resources Conservation Service (U.S. Geological Survey, 2017), point data from digitized historical topographic maps, and bathymetric...

Lidar data were collected November 01, 2022 using a boat mounted Velodyne VLP-16 unit and methodology similar to that described by Huizinga and Wagner (2019). Multibeam sonar data were collected October 31-November 01, 2022 using a Norbit...

In 2021, the USGS 3D Elevation Program (3DEP) funded the collection of topo-bathymetric lidar (sometimes referred to as "green lidar") on the McKenzie River, Oregon. As part of this acquisition, lidar data were collected starting on the McKenzie River below Trail Bridge Reservoir and extending downstream roughly 125 km to its confluence with the Willamette River. Bathymetric lidar produced measurements of river bathymetry in areas of the McKenzie River channel that were generally less than 3 m in depth but did not produce measurements in deeper areas of the river. To fill the gaps in the topo-bathymetric lidar dataset (commonly referred to as "voids"), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers funded USGS to collect boat-based...

Field-based multibeam sonar surveys were collected along the Colorado River, near Lees Ferry, Arizona from a motorized cataraft. These data were used to assess the accuracy of river bathymetry inferred from the ASTRALiTe bathymetric lidar, acquired contemporaneously from the same survey vessel. These data sets were collected to support research focused on developing innovative methods for non-contact measurement of river discharge based on various forms of remotely sensed data. The sonar survey data were exported to a comma-separated text file and the resulting *.csv file contain for each point the spatial coordinates, and depth (expressed as a negative number), all in meters

Data from the bathymetric survey were combined with data from an aerial Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) survey conducted in 2016 by the National Resources Conservation Service (U.S. Geological Survey, 2017) to create a digital elevation model (DEM) of the extent of the flood pool of the lake and compute volume (storage capacity) of the lake at 1-foot increments in water surface elevation from 444-557 feet (ft)...

To support an investigation of the feasibility of measuring river bathymetry using a polarizing lidar sensor, lidar and field measurements were collected on the Colorado River near Lees Ferry, Arizona on September 23, 2019. This parent data release includes links to child pages for the following data sets: 1) Lidar data used for mapping channel bathymetry (depth), acquired with a novel instrument that was developed by ASTRALiTe to distinguish between returns from the water surface and riverbed based on the polarization of laser pulses. 2) Field-based sonar surveys of bed topography used to evaluate the bathymetric mapping capabilities of the ASTRALiTe lidar. 3) Field-based measurements with instruments used...

Bathymetric data were collected from select sites along the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 26-27, 2017, to support research on sturgeon habitat, dispersion processes, and geomorphic change along the Kootenai and, more broadly, remote sensing of rivers. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Geospatial Program (NGP) and National Research Program (NRP) acquired hyperspectral image data from the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry, ID. The image data extended from the Kootenai Tribal FishHatchery downstream to the Copeland bridge. Image data acquisition occurred on September 27, 2017. A field team collected ground truthing data within the project area to calibrate and validate estimates of water depth...
