Subaerial landslides at the head of Barry Arm Fjord in southern Alaska could generate tsunamis (if they rapidly failed into the Fjord) and are therefore a potential threat to people, marine interests, and infrastructure throughout the Prince William Sound region. Augustine volcano, which is shown in the middle of this map of volcanic eruptions in southern Alaska during the past half century, began erupting early Thursday, March 27, 1986, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Augustine is the only one of the volcanoes shown on the map that is not on the mainland. It forms a small, uninhabited island of the same name in southern Cook Inlet about 180 miles southwest of Anchorage and 70 miles west of Homer on the Kenai Peninsula. The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of province is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. This dataset is a compilation of data that has been studied and published separately, and in some cases adjacent provinces do not share a common boundary. As a consequence, there are numerous gaps and overlaps in this layer.
