This dataset includes magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in July 2019 in the Silverton Caldera complex, Colorado, in the Southern Rocky Mountain Volcanic Field, by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Along with geologic mapping, airborne magnetics, airborne electromagnetics, and audiomagnetotellurics, the USGS collected MT data at 24 sites along five profiles ranging from 2 to 5 kilometers in length: across Red Mountain of the Silverton caldera, within the caldera in Eureka Graben, across the south-eastern margin of the caldera along Arrastra Gulch, across the southern margin of the caldera along the western margin of Kendall Mountain, and across the south-western margin of the caldera along South Fork...

Inland wetlands produce, biogeochemically process and sequester carbon. Wetlands that are hydrologically connected to stream and river networks are commonly considered to be major sources of carbon that may be biologically or photochemically processed in-stream, or exported to coastal regions. However, very little is known about the potential or actual lateral carbon fluxes from different major wetland types, or the downstream fate of that carbon (rapid decomposition vs. sequestration vs. export). Major questions: What is the variability in potential carbon sources (as dissolved organic C, dissolved inorganic C, CO2 and CH4) from major inland wetland types to inland waters? What metrics and/or markers (chemical,...

This data release includes magnetotelluric (MT) sounding data collected in July 2018 in the Silverton Caldera complex, Colorado, in the Southern Rocky Mountain Volcanic Field, by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Along with geologic mapping, airborne magnetics, airborne electromagnetics, and audiomagnetotellurics, the USGS collected MT data at 22 sites along four profiles ranging from 3 to 6 kilometers in length across the north-western structural margin of the Silverton caldera in Mineral Basin (MB01-MB05), across the south-eastern margin of the caldera along Cunningham Creek (CC01-CC05), within the caldera in Eureka Graben (EG01-EG05), and within the caldera along upper Cement Creek near the Gold King mine (GK01-GK09).

Streamflows in late spring and summer have declined over the last century in the western U.S. and mean annual streamflow is projected to decrease by six to 25% over the next 100 years. In arid and semi-arid regions of the western US, it is likely that some perennial streams will shift to intermittent flow regimes in response to climate-driven changes in timing and magnitude of precipitation, runoff, and evaporation. The project will address the following two research question: how will small stream (1st-3rd order) low flow hydrology be impacted by predicted longer, drier summers in the Upper Colorado River Basin under climate change and in turn, what will be the resulting impacts on riparian plant communities?...

Conclusions: Reduction in landscape carrying capacity for wolf population distribution and viability depends largely on the degree of road density, public land ownership, amount of forest cover and high elk densities (another indicator of suitable habitat). Synopsis: This study employed two types of spatial models to evaluate the potential of wolf reintroduction in the southern Rocky Mountain region. A multiple logistic regression was used to develop a resource-selection function relating wolf distribution in the Greater Yellowstone region with regional-scale habitat variables. Researchers also used a spatially explicit population model to predict wolf distribution and viability at several potential reintroduction...

Along with geologic mapping, airborne magnetics, airborne electromagnetics, and magnetotellurics, the USGS collected AMT data at 26 sites along five profiles ranging from 2 to 5 kilometers in length: across Red Mountain of the Silverton caldera, within the caldera in Eureka Graben, across the south-eastern margin of the caldera along Arrastra Gulch, across the southern margin of the caldera along the western margin of Kendall Mountain, and across the south-western margin of the caldera along South Fork...

Wildfires and housing development have increased since the 1990s, presenting unique challenges for fire management. However, it is unclear how the relative influences of housing growth and changing wildfire occurrence have contributed to risk to homes. We fit a random forest using weather, land cover, topography, and past fire history to predict burn probabilities and uncertainty intervals. Then, we estimated risk at 1-km resolution and monthly intervals from 1990 through 2019 by combining predicted burn probabilities with housing density across the Southern Rocky Mountains. We used 3 scenarios to evaluate how housing growth and changes in burn probability influenced risk individually and combined (observed, 1990...
