The Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset contains data collected on contaminants in sediments, benthic invertebrate populations, fish populations and abnormalities, and fish health of primarily brown bullhead in Areas of Concerns (AOCs) on Lake Erie. A subset of the larger dataset, this section specifically handles reference tables, used in database design in order to standardize often used values and to make the data file efficient, for the main tables of the LEEI dataset. The reference tables include: site.csv, site_date.csv, and species.csv.
The North American freshwater mussel tribe Quadrulini has a suite of life history adaptations, however, the evolution of life histories in this group has yet to be explored using comparative phylogenetic methods. Here we provide the AHE DNA sequence alignment representing 27 species from the subfamily Ambleminae that was used to estimate a phylogenomic reconstruction of Quadrulini. Additionally, we provide a compilation of host use information and larval length and height measurements utilized to trace the evolution of life history characteristics, such as larval morphology and host attraction strategy. Phylogenetic trees are presented representing phylogenetic inference performed under Maximum Likelihood, Maximum...

The data release presents observations of riparian vegetation, topography, soil characteristics, and ground cover in three river segments located above, below, and between the former Glines Canyon and Elwha Dams on the Elwha River, near Port Angeles, WA (river kilometers 2.5 to 31) to assess effects of dam removal on riparian vegetation. Vegetation data were collected before dam removal in 2005 and 2010, and after dam removal in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017. Vegetation data were collected from 100 square meter plots located on 15 cross-river transects spanning all riparian landforms. Soil samples collected in 2017 were analyzed for soil nutrients and texture. Topographic surveys were conducted to measure the elevation...

This portion of the data release presents fish diet data from Chinook and coho salmon collected in the Elwha River estuary, Washington, in 2006, 2007, 2013, and 2014 (there are no associated USGS Field Activities numbers because data were collected predominantly by biologists from the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe). Fish were collected using a beach seine at six locations throughout the estuary. Fish were transferred to buckets containing aerated ambient water and kept cool until handling. We anesthetized fish in a diluted solution of tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) to count, identify, and measure fork length (FL) to the nearest mm and weight to the nearest 0.1 g. After recovery from anesthesia, all fish were released...

This Fish Health Evaluation dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the health of fish—primarily brown bullhead—sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie, as measured by anomalies, tumors, biomarkers, and other heath indicators. The focus of the data in the Fish Health dataset is from the 1998-2000 study, which reevaluated fish health in comparison to data from various historical studies also in the dataset. All of the data from the 1998-2000 evaluation and the data used for comparison from historical studies are in the main FISH_HEALTH table; additional historical data, which presumably fell out of scope for comparison, is also in the OLDFISHDATA_NOTERIE...
We examined species boundaries within an imperiled group of freshwater mussels in the genus Cyclonaias (Bivalvia: Unionidae) using morphometrics, molecular phylogenetics, and multispecies coalescent models to help guide pending conservation assessments and legislative decisions. Congruence across all lines of evidence indicated that current taxonomy overestimates diversity in the C. pustulosa species complex, while underestimating diversity in the C. nodulata species complex. Here we provide all molecular, morphological, and collection information collected and analyzed in our investigation.
Fifty-one tidal marsh sites across five regions (sub-embayments) were surveyed in the Delta, Suisun Bay, San Pablo Bay, central San Francisco Bay, and South San Francisco Bay. Vegetation surveys spanned ten years, from July 2008 to January 2018. A total of 5,112 plots were surveyed. Plots were positioned on transects along an elevation gradient and evenly distributed across each site, where possible, to capture spatial variability along elevation and distance gradients. At each plot, percent cover of all plant species, bare ground, and litter as well as average height was visually assessed within a 0.25 m2 quadrat. Total plant cover in a plot could exceed 100 percent due to vegetation layering. Bare ground and litter...
