Monitoring 1-Changes in Plant and Animal Distribution: Fauna,
Species of Concern: Fish
Invasive species are a concern worldwide as they can displace native species, reduce biodiversity, and disrupt ecological processes. European bird cherry (Prunus padus) (EBC) is an invasive ornamental tree that is rapidly spreading and possibly displacing native trees along streams in parts of urban Alaska. The objectives of this study were to: 1) map the current distribution of EBC along two Anchorage streams, Campbell and Chester creeks, and 2) determine the effects of EBC on selected ecological processes linked to stream salmon food webs. Data from the 2009 and 2010 field seasons showed: EBC was widely distributed along Campbell and Chester creeks; EBC leaf litter in streams broke down rapidly and supported similar...

Report is divided into three sections. In Section I, an overview of the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Management Area is provided, including a description of the area and subareas, Board of Fish activities, and management information and activities. In Section II, effort and harvest results are presented. In Section III, more detailed summaries of major fisheries and activities are provided

Concerns regarding the size and sex composition of Yukon River Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha have been expressed in public meetings for over a decade. However, reports of small size and low numbers of females have become increasingly common in recent years, and apprehension over the long-term health of the stock has grown within the drainage. In response to these reports, the Salmon Size Subcommittee of the US/Canada Yukon River Joint Technical Committee was formed and charged with advising the Committee, and thereby the US/Canada Yukon River Panel, with respect to changes in Chinook salmon age, sex, and size composition. This report, which summarizes the findings of prior investigations and the scientific...

Yukon River Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) have been targeted in large-mesh gill net fisheries for over 100 years. Recent reductions in productivity and perceptions of reduced size and earlier age at maturation have elevated concerns regarding the potential consequences of the selective exploitation of large fish. Investigations associating changes in population productivity and demography, particularly size and age composition, with overharvest and selective exploitation are common in the fisheries literature. However, most such investigations have considered long-lived species repeatedly subject to exploitation, often prior to maturation. Similar investigations concerning semelparous Pacific salmon...

We examined how marine-derived nutrients (MDN), in the form of spawning Pacific salmon, influenced the nutritional status and delta super(15)N of stream-dwelling fishes. We sampled juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) during spring and fall from 11 south-central Alaskan streams that ranged widely in spawning salmon biomass (0.1-4.7 kg.m super(-2)). Growth rate (as indexed by RNA-DNA ratios), energy density, and delta super(15)N enrichment in spring-sampled fishes increased with spawner biomass, indicating the persistence of spawner effects more than 6 months after salmon spawning. Point estimates suggest that spawner effects on nutrition were substantially greater for coho...

Country of origin provides the basis for allocating harvests of Yukon River chum salmon. The genetic divergence among Yukon River chum salmon populations adjacent to the international border as revealed by allozyme and micro satellite variation is insufficient to determine the country of origin of returning fish using mixed-stock analysis (MSA). Consequently, we investigated the resolution provided by alternative genetic markers in an attempt to detect levels of divergence that would be sufficient for MSA. We analyzed 10 Yukon River chum salmon populations for variation at 30 variable amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) loci and for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) restriction site variation. We assessed these...
