Report is divided into two sections. In Section I, an introductory overview of the Northern Cook Inlet Management Area is presented, including: a general geographic and organizational description of the management area; an inventory of the available fishery resources; an overview of the Alaska Board of Fisheries processes; existing management plans; a historical perspective of recreational angler effort, catch and harvest; and an approximation of the economic value of the recreational fisheries. A general description of research, management and educational activities, ongoing access programs, and a summary of the current major biological and social issues in the management area are also presented. In Section II,...

Information specific to recreational fisheries in the Kuskokwim-Goodnews Management Area in 2011 and preliminary information for 2012 is presented. Estimates of fishing effort, total catch, and effort is summarized through the 2011 season. This information is provided to the Alaska Board of Fisheries (board), as well as to the general public and interested parties. Summaries of major fisheries within the area are detailed, including descriptions of the performance of these fisheries, regulatory actions by the board, social and biological issues, and descriptions of ongoing research and management activities. The remote waters of the Kuskokwim-Goodnews Management Area supported approximately 22,000 angler-days of...

At northern limits of a species? distribution, fish habitat requirements are often linked to thermal preferences, and the presence of overwintering habitat. However, logistical challenges and hydrologic processes typical of glacial systems could compromize the identification of these habitats, particularly in large river environments. Our goal was to identify and characterize spawning habitat for fall-run chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta and model habitat selection from spatial distributions of tagged individuals in the Tanana River, Alaska using an approach that combined ground surveys with remote sensing. Models included braiding, sinuosity, ice-free water surface area (indicating groundwater influence), and persistent...

Since 1996, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologists have annually used fish wheels to capture migrating adult fall chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta in the main-stem Yukon River, Alaska, and estimated their abundance via mark- recapture methods. In each year of the study, the mark rate of captured fish at a site near Rampart has been substantially greater than rates observed at numerous locations upriver of that site. The factors most likely to cause the observed reduction in the mark rate are violations of mark-recapture model assumptions or the mortality of marked fish between the Rampart site and upriver locations. Results of studies conducted through 2000 were most consistent with the hypothesis of mortality....

The Cook Inlet Planning Area includes and abuts productive commercial, subsistence, and sport fishing grounds. Outer continental shelf minerals exploration, development and production activities could affect the productivity of these fisheries, the quality of recreation opportunities, and the demand for tourism-related services. The marine sport fisheries of lower and central Cook Inlet are the focus of a large recreation based economic sector that provides non-monetary benefits to participants and monetary benefits to tourism-related businesses. This study and a companion study, Lee et al. [1999b], develop a predictive model of participation rate changes that can be linked to a regional inputoutput model to estimate...

A pilot study was conducted to evaluate the use of PIT tags and underwater antennas to measure juvenile salmon growth rates and site fidelity. Juvenile coho (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytsha) growth rates and site fidelity were compared between two streams within the Susitna River drainage in Southcentral Alaska. The two study streams were selected to represent a low-sloped wetland stream which is common on the west side of the drainage and a moderate sloped upland stream that drains the Talkeetna mountains which is common on the east side of the drainage. Comparisons of growth rates and site fidelity within these two streams were used to test for the differences in the habitat quality...
