We studied behavioral and ecologic effects of differential predation pressure on moose (Alces alces gigas) in the eastern Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska, during 1996-1998. Annual mortality from grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) and wolf (Canis lupus) predation was higher for solitary yearling moose than for dependent yearlings (those with adults) and solitary adults.

Monitoring 1-Changes in Plant and Animal Distribution: Fauna,
A program to control wolves (Canis lupus) in interior Alaska in 1993 and 1994 did not result in expected increases in calf survival in the Delta caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herd (DCH). Therefore, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game conducted a study to determine causes of calf mortality during 1995-1997 and monitored recruitment, mortality, and population size annually in the DCH for 6 years after wolf control ended. Despite removal of 60-62% of the autumn 1993 wolf population, wolves still killed 25% of 166 radiocollared calves between birth in mid- to late May and 30 September during 1995-1997. Although autumn calf:cow ratios in the DCH increased after wolf control, similar increases in calf:cow ratios occurred...

Species of Concern: Mammals
Cook Inlet, Alaska belugas (CIB) (Delphinapterus leucas ) are a genetically and geographically isolated wild stock, residing in the upper Inlet's waters year-round. Four studies were conducted to help evaluate CIB health and survival threats: 1) characterization of hematology and serum chemistry values in Bristol Bay belugas (BBB), a healthy growing population, for comparison to CIB, 2) characterization of hematology and serum chemistry variation patterns from captive belugas over 22 years, to provide methods applicable to wild populations such as CIB, 3) development of a model using anthropogenic and environmental factors to demonstrate CIB population trajectories based on survival and fecundity rates in a simulated...

Species of Concern: Mammals
Shallow Bay is a 230 hectare wetland at the south end of Lake Laberge in the southern Yukon. It has been central to the original use of the area by the Ta’an Kwachan first nation. It is an important waterfowl staging area; a key fish spawning and rearing area, and is used by moose, beaver, bear, mustelids, muskrats and a host of bird species. We found 36 species of water birds using the area; banded waterfowl showed birds from all North American flyways except the Atlantic were using the area. Most use by water birds was for staging although at least 4 species were breeding. Over 100 species of songbirds were observed and at least 17 species were breeding. Wood frogs, and 9 species of fish were identified. 6 species...
