Increased nutrient and sediment loading have caused observable changes in algal community composition, and thereby, altered the quality and quantity of food resources available to native freshwater mussels. Our objective was to characterize the relationship between nutrient conditions and mussel food quality and examine the effects on the fatty acid composition, growth and survival of juvenile mussels. Juvenile Lampsilis cardium and L. siliquoidea were deployed in cages for 28 d at four riverine and four lacustrine sites in the lower St. Croix River, Minnesota/Wisconsin, USA. Mussel foot tissue and food resources (four seston fractions and surficial sediment) were analyzed for quantitative fatty acid (FA) composition....
The goal of this project was to quantify the background physiological condition of mussels in the Minnesota and St. Croix River basins using glycogen as an indicator of physiological stress. We obtained 230 samples of foot tissue from Lampsilis cardium (n=118) and Lasmigona complanata (n=112) from a total of four rivers during September 1-5, 2015. From each sample, we weighed out a 10.0 ± 2.0 mg aliquot for glycogen determination by the alkaline digestion and phenol-sulfuric acid spectrophotometric method. The accuracy of glycogen determinations was quantified by the use of procedural blanks, replicates of an in-house reference material, triplicate analysis of four aqueous calibration standards, duplicate analysis...

These are survey data for the Forest City Dam at the Outlet to East Grand Lake on the St. Croix River between Maine and Canada. And they are bathymetric data surrounding the outlet dam collected with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP)
Spectaclecase (Margaritifera monodonta) is a federally endangered freshwater mussel species that has experienced a 55% reduction in range (USFWS 2014) and is currently concentrated in three rivers in the Midwest of the United States (Gasconade, Meramec Rivers, MO, and St. Croix River, WI). Its preference for living under large rocks and boulders has limited detection of new populations by traditional survey methods. Environmental DNA technology has been used to detect invasive and rare species, but its use for detection of rare, benthic-dwelling species in large flowing systems has been limited. Here, we propose using environmental DNA to identify presumable sites for discovery of M. monodonta. We designed a M....
This dataset includes information from multiple taxa collected from four main reaches in the Upper Mississippi River Basin, including La Grange reach of Illinois River, Pool 2 of Mississippi River, Pool 19 of Mississippi River, and the St. Croix River. Taxa include hydropsychid caddisflies, chironomids, hexagenia mayflies, threeridge mussels, mapleleaf mussels, Wabash pigtoe mussels, bigmouth buffalo, gizzard shad, and bluegill. Seston samples were also collected, in addition to water samples for identifying and enumerating phytoplankton species. Fatty acids, lipids, and stable isotopes were quantified for the aforementioned taxa. Water quality data were recorded at the time of sample collection and discharge data...
