In support of U.S. Geological Survey invasive carp research examining aggregations of invasive carp in the tail water of dams, water velocity measurements were made at cross sections in the Illinois River below Starved Rock Lock and Dam on June 16, 2021. A total of 16 cross sections were surveyed, with two transects per cross section. Water depth and crew safety limited the extent of the survey. The discharge in the Illinois River at Starved Rock Lock and Dam at the time of data collection was approximately 185.7 cubic meters per second. A hydrodynamic and water-quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was developed of a 21-mile reach of the upper Illinois River including a 3-mile reach of a major tributary, the Fox River. The CE-QUAL-W2 model is 2-dimensional in the vertical and longitudinal directions and averaged over the lateral direction. Continuous water quality and streamgage data provided time-series data for model boundary conditions. Discrete velocity, cross-section area, and temperature profiles at several locations within the study reach provided model calibration data. The dataset is comprised of river conditions at La Grange, Peoria, Starved Rock, Marseilles, and Dresden Island Locks and Dams, along the Illinois River. Data were recorded bihourly from 1 Jan 1985 – 31 Dec 2016. For each location, pool elevation (ft), tailwater elevation (ft), head height (ft; calculated by the difference between pool elevation and tailwater elevation), discharge (cfs; when available) and total gate openness (sum of all open gates in ft), are given, where available. Open river conditions were calculated (0 = closed, 1 = open) for each two hour time period. Dam openness was assessed using the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers thresholds for open river conditions at each location.

These datasets (e.g., 'Starved Rock fish clearing_multi-beam imaging sonar fish data_Pre-clearing_Sonar-s1.csv') include exported information (e.g., fish detection counts) from processed fixed-location multi-beam imaging sonar and mobile side-scan sonar data. Fish abundance in the navigation lock was determined using mobile side-scan surveys, while multi-beam imaging sonars were used to determine fish counts relative to time (i.e., fish per minute). The datasets were used to examine the efficacy of electricity and underwater acoustics, used in tandem, to affect fish abundance (as determined by hydroacoustic data sampling).

ADCP data were collected on May 22, 2015 immediately downstream of Starved Rock Lock and Dam near Utica, IL.The data were collected as reciprocal pairs of measurements at cross-sections, and as longitudinal lines roughly along the centerline of the channel. The data are provided in: (1) a zipped folder containing classic ascii output files exported from WinRiverII software, and a README text file indicating which files are reciprocal pairs (2) a zipped folder containing KML files for each transect.
Water velocities were measured in the Illinois and Des Plaines Rivers using a Teledyne Rio Grande 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). To evaluate how bigheaded carps move upstream through and around Starved Rock Lock and Dam (SRLD) on the Illinois River, their movements were monitored using acoustic telemetry. This dataset describes the results of this study and was used to compare the residency duration of upstream migrants downstream of SRLD between years, tailwater elevation, and water temperature, and how tailwater elevation and water temperature influenced their timing of arrival downstream of SRLD. Calculation of passage and residency are available in the thesis of Matthew Lubejko (Southern, Illinois University, 2016).
