North American sagebrush-steppe ecosystems have decreased by about 50 percent since European settlement. As a result, sagebrush-steppe dependent species, such as the Gunnison sage-grouse, have experienced drastic range contractions and population declines. Coordinated ecosystem-wide research, integrated with monitoring and management activities, is needed to help maintain existing sagebrush habitats; however, products that accurately model and map sagebrush habitats in detail over the Gunnison Basin in Colorado are still unavailable. This research employs a combination of methods, including (1) modeling sagebrush rangeland as a series of independent objective components that can be combined and customized by any...

The U.S. Geological Survey conducted an assessment of coal resources and reserves in the Little Snake River coal field and Red Desert area of the Greater Green River Basin in Southwest Wyoming. A comprehensive database was compiled to support this assessment that includes data points for drill-holes and measured sections. Associated with these resources are lithology descriptors, (focusing on coal beds of varying depth) as well as coal quality data. Sources of data includes the USGS National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS), Anadarko Land Corporation (Anadarko), Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC), and previously unpublished data in USGS files. The primary table describes the sample location and...

Accurate and consistent estimates of shrubland ecosystem components are crucial to a better understanding of ecosystems condition in arid and semiarid lands. We developed an innovative approach by integrating multiple information to quantify shrubland components as continuous field products within the National Land Cover Database (NLCD). The approach consists of five major parts: field sample collection, high-resolution mapping of shrubland components using WorldView-3 imagery and regression tree models, Landsat 8 radiometric balancing and phenological mosaicking, coarse resolution estimate of shrubland components across a large geographic extent using Landsat 8 phenological mosaics and regression tree models, and...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains stream water chemistry and streamflow data collected in late August and early September, 2021 from 28 sites located throughout Colorado, USA. The sampled streams all drain high-elevation mountain watersheds in areas where the bedrock is hydrothermally altered and contains abundant sulfide minerals. Most sampled streams are therefore affected by natural acid-rock drainage. All sites had been sampled in prior years so that the 2021 data could be used to evaluate potential changes in stream water chemistry in recent decades. Streamflow was also quantified at most sites using data from a sodium chloride slug addition wherein specific conductivity readings were...

This data release contains data associated with the USGS SIM publication "Stratigraphic Cross Sections of the Lewis Shale in the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province, Wyoming and Colorado". North-to-southeast (A–A’), west-to-east (B–B’), and southwest-to-northeast (C–C’) cross sections were created from 105 wells throughout the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province. The cross sections highlight 15 clinothems within the Lewis Shale, Fox Hills Sandstone, and Lance Formation progradational system. Data include well information and depths to key stratigraphic surfaces for 105 wells within the three cross sections. Well information includes the cross section identification, API #, well name,...

In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) completed a probabilistic assessment of the volume of technically recoverable oil resources available if current carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) technologies were applied in amenable oil reservoirs underlying the onshore and State waters area of the conterminous United States. The assessment also includes estimates of the magnitude of CO2 stored (retained) resulting from CO2-EOR activities. The USGS assessment team evaluated 3524 oil reservoirs that were miscible to injected CO2. The assessed reservoirs are located in 185 previously defined USGS plays in 33 petroleum provinces (or basins) of 7 national regions. All candidate reservoir data, except 12 reservoirs...

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted field data collection efforts during the weeks of September 9-13 and November 18-22, 2019, using a combination of technologies to map and validate topography, vegetation, and features in two areas of interest (AOI's) in north central Colorado. The western AOI included land managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service. The eastern AOI included agricultural and urban areas. The work was initiated as an effort to test and evaluate the Leica Geosystems CountryMapper sensor. The CountryMapper is a hybrid sensor that collects imagery and light detection and ranging (lidar) data simultaneously. The CountryMapper has the potential to collect data...

This data release contains the boundaries of assessment units and input data for the assessment of coalbed gas resources in the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province, Colorado and New Mexico. The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown herein as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS), and Coal Creek Watershed Coalition (CCWC) working independently, have intermittently collected samples of surface- and groundwater and springs around Mount Emmons, near Crested Butte, Colorado. This data release is a compilation of the comprehensive inorganic chemical analyses conducted as a result of that sampling. The earliest samples were collected in the summer of 1997, and subsequent sampling has continued through 2019. Water samples collected in the Elk Creek basin, sample identifiers starting with EC, have been previously published in three U.S. Geological Survey reports; Verplanck and others, 2007, Manning and...

This child item contains one structural grid generated on the top of the Almond Formation (base Lewis Shale) and one grid on the top of the Fox Hills Sandstone. The top of the Lewis Shale and base of the Fox Hills Sandstone interfinger on a regional scale, so the top of the Fox Hills Sandstone was chosen as a structural horizon for consistency. The grids were generated by picking tops in borehole geophysical logs and interpolating between them in the Southwestern Wyoming Province in Wyoming and Colorado. The Lewis Shale in the eastern part of the province is bounded to the north and south by fault zones, to the east by uplift, and to the west by the Lewis stratigraphic pinch-out. The Lewis Shale has been uplifted...
