Information from photograph: The Canyons of Major Powell's Famous Exploration 1869-1872. Canyons of the Green and Colorado rivers that were explored by Major Powell during his 1869-1872 expedition were photographed by J.K. Hillers and E.O. Beaman shortly afterward. Some of these photographs are paired with counterparts made from the same camera stations by Hal G. Stephens during the summer of 1968 are shown here. Where works of man have not interfered with natural erosion - the span of 100 years has produced few discernible changes. Stamped on back of photograph: U.S. Geological Survey Exhibits Unit Panel #D0-5. Individual photographs available in the J.K. Hillers and Hal G. Stephens collections.
