Water introduced to surface drainages, such as agricultural and roadway runoff, mine drainage, or coalbed natural gas (CBNG)-produced water, potentially can be of environmental concern. In order to mitigate potential environmental effects, it may be important to be able to trace water discharged to the surface as it infiltrates and interacts with near-surface aquifers. We have chosen to study water withdrawn during CBNG production for isotope tracing in the hyporheic zone because it poses a variety of economic, environmental, and policy issues in the Rocky Mountain states. Ground water quality must be protected as CBNG water is added to semiarid ecosystems. Strontium (Sr) isotopes are effective fingerprints of the...

This data release includes a table of concentrations (Sr, U) and radiogenic-isotope compositions (87Sr/86Sr, 234U/238U) for samples of modern lake water as well as a table of isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sr and 234U/238U) for carbonate-rich samples from a 12.4-m-long composite core of lacustrine sediment from Lower Pahranagat Lake in southeastern Nevada, USA. Stratigraphic and geochronologic context for depths and ages of core material are also included here based on Bayesian age-depth modeling software (Bacon v. 2.2) published in a previous report (Theissen et al., 2019, https://doi.org/10.1017/qua.2019.11).
These metadata sets present the comprehensive geochemical composition of solid and water samples from the site of a 11.4ML (million liters) wastewater spill discovered in January, 2015. Analyses of a pipeline sample (analyses of select analytes), supplied by the North Dakota Department of Health are also included. The spill was near Blacktail Creek, north of Williston, ND. The leak was from a pipeline located approximately 70m from Blacktail Creek. The creek flows 17km before entering the Little Muddy River, a tributary to the Missouri River. The study included samples collected in waters upstream and downstream from Blacktail Creek in February and June 2015, June 2016, and June 2017. These data sets include field...
Surface water, springs and wells in Pinnacles National Park (San Benito and Monterey Counties, CA) were sampled in the Fall of 2016 and Spring of 2017. Field parameters such as in situ pH, TDS/conductivity, and temperature were assessed. GPS coordinates for all samples were taken. Comprehensive groundwater chemistry, including major and minor elements, alkalinity, nutrients (and other parameters), Sr isotopes and REE concentrations, was analyzed at the National Water Quality Lab, USGS, Denver CO; and in USGS labs in Menlo Park, CA. One field visit on 8/20/2017 was made to obtain rock samples from the volcanic and sedimentary rocks in and around the park, which were digested and analyzed for whole rock chemistry...

This data release contains tabular data (comma-separated-value files) of natural radiogenic isotopes of strontium, uranium, and thorium for samples of modern water, speleothems, associated with Fitton Cave, north central Arkansas, as well as rock that host the cave deposits. In addition, U-series ages (230Th/U dates and model 234U/238U dates) are calculated from those data for subsamples of speleothems. Stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon are reported for a subset of the stalagmite samples. Sample locations and descriptions as well as specific sub-sample imagery and narrative explanations are included as information supporting the analyses. Selected results are depicted as data plots in an accompanying Excel spreadsheet...

Chemical changes in hot springs, as recorded by thermal waters and their mineral deposits, provide a window into the evolution of Yellowstone’s postglacial hydrothermal system. Travertine precipitated from thermal waters provide a record of chemical changes through time because they can be dated using U-series disequilibrium geochronology. These temporal data, along with measured radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr and stable isotope (carbon and oxygen) compositions and elemental concentrations, allow for the investigation of changes in hydrothermal system chemistry over time. This data release contains analyses conducted on samples of hydrothermal travertine collected from Upper and Lower Geyser Basins and near Madison Junction...

The radiogenic isotope ratios of strontium (Sr) and uranium (U), specifically 87Sr/86Sr and 234U/238U, are useful tracers of water-rock interactions. Sr isotopic compositions in groundwater are mostly controlled by dissolution or exchange with Sr contained in aquifer rocks whereas the U isotopic compositions are more controlled by chemical and kinetic processes during groundwater flow. Insights into groundwater circulation patterns through the shallow subsurface at Yellowstone National Park can be aided by investigations of these isotopes. This data release contains tables with new isotope data consisting of concentrations (Sr, U) and radiogenic-isotope compositions (87Sr/86Sr, 234U/238U) for water samples from...
