This dataset is a polygon coverage of the thickness of the overburden of the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed, in feet. It was produced by importing 1:100,000 (30-minute) and 1:24,000 scale (7.5-minute) digital elevation models (DEM) into ARC, and merging the lattices into one. The structure elevation grid for the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed was subtracted from the surface elevation grid, creating overburden thickness. This grid was contoured within the known extent of the Pocahontas No. 3 coal bed into 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000 foot lines. This vector file was imported to ARC. The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000-scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. These categories are areas where resources are mined underground, areas where resources are mined on the surface, and areas where resources are not mined. This map is one of many Geographic Information System (GIS) products of the National Coal Assessment that is being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with State geological surveys and other Federal and State agencies. This data represents a vegetation map for Bluestone National Scenic River. It contains nonoverlapping polygons which represent vegetation classes, aquatic features, and cultural features. Vegetation types were classified based on statistical analysis of plot data collected on the ground from 2003 through 2005. Polygons were delineated based on interpretation of digital and hard copy aerial photography flown in 2003.
