This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release contains tree-core, soil-gas, and soil data collected at the Vienna Wells Superfund site in Vienna, Missouri by the U.S. Geological Survey between 2011 and 2016. Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) are reported for each sample in each medium. Tree-core sampling was conducted over two days (July 29, 2014 and May 21, 2015). Trees sampled on July 29, 2014 were used to calculate concentration centroids for each tree to compare with concentration centroids in soil samples. Tree 29 was sampled on May 21, 2015 to characterize and model tetrachloroethylene concentrations within a single tree. An interpolated soil surface was created from 1,016 soil samples (see doi:...

Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge and Season (WRTDS) and WRTDS with Kalman filtering (WRTDS_K) models were developed for total and dissolved cadmium, zinc and lead; total phosphorus and nitrogen; and dissolved orthophosphate at twelve sites in the Spokane River watershed, northern Idaho, for water years 1990 to 2018. The data table contains the annual mean concentrations and annual total loads estimated by WRTDS_K, and the flow-normalized annual mean concentrations and flow-normalized annual total loads estimated by WRTDS for each modeled site and constituent.

Patrick Bayou, a section of the Houston Ship Channel near Deer Park, Texas, has accumulated permitted industrial wastewater discharges, municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent, and stormwater runoff from adjacent industrial facilities and nearby urban and residential areas. These discharges are suspected to be the primary sources of the sediment contamination in the Patrick Bayou section of the Houston Ship Channel near Deer Park, Texas. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) placed Patrick Bayou on the Superfund program’s National Priorities List because of sediment contamination detected in the wetlands bordering Patrick Bayou, posing a threat to downstream fisheries. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS),...
In 1995, the discovery of leg malformations in several screech owl (Otis asio) nestlings and in their female parent at a Department of Energy (DOE) Superfund site in South Carolina prompted an investigation into the nature of the observed abnormalities. Surviving nestlings and the female parent were transferred to a captive screech owl breeding colony at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Laurel, MD. The malformed female parent and her offspring were each mated with normal owls from the colony for 3 yr. Matings of the malformed female produced five malformed and six normal owls, all owls produced by matings of normal offspring were normal. Malformed offspring were euthanized when it became apparent that...

Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene in soil-gas measured using solid ploymer samplers at the Vienna Wells site, Vienna, deployed from August 9, 2015 to June 27, 2016. Also contains information on the depth below ground surface of the passive sampler. These data support the following publication: Wilson, J.L., Samaranayake, V.A., Limmer, M.A., Schumacher, J.G., Burken, J.G., 2017, Contaminant Gradients in Trees: Directional Tree Coring Reveals Boundaries of Soil and Soil-Gas Contamination with Potential Applications in Vapor Intrusion Assessment: Environmental Science and Technology, Just Accepted Manuscript. Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in interpolated soil surface boundary points at the Vienna Wells Site: Maries County, Missouri. This boundary is composed of points with an assumed PCE concentration of 11 micrograms per kilogram (detection limit) and was used with the soil sample dataset (doi: 10.5066/F71835D8) to create an interpolated surface. These data support the following publication: Wilson, J.L., Samaranayake, V.A., Limmer, M.A., Schumacher, J.G., Burken, J.G., 2017, Contaminant Gradients in Trees: Directional Tree Coring Reveals Boundaries of Soil and Soil-Gas Contamination with Potential Applications in Vapor Intrusion Assessment: Environmental Science and Technology, Just Accepted Manuscript....

This dataset contains the soil data collected at the Vienna Wells Superfund site in Vienna, Missouri by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), and 1,1,2-Trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane (CFC-113) are provided in micrograms per kilogram. Sample depths range from 0 to 18 feet below ground surface. Concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in points from interpolated tetrachloroethylene soil data gridded at a 1-m interval at the Vienna Wells site, Vienna, Missouri, 2012-2015. These data were extracted at 1-meter intervals from interpolating published soil data (doi: https://doi.org/10.5066/F71835D8), which was created using the inverse-distance weighting method at a 1-meter interval, the mean PCE concentration at each location, a power of 2, and minimum and maximum neighbor search of 10 and 15. These data support the following publication: Wilson, J.L., Samaranayake, V.A., Limmer, M.A., Schumacher, J.G., Burken, J.G., 2017, Contaminant Gradients in Trees: Directional Tree Coring Reveals Boundaries of Soil...

Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge and Season (WRTDS) models were developed for total and dissolved cadmium, lead and zinc; total phosphorus and nitrogen; and dissolved orthophosphate at twelve sites in the Spokane River watershed for water years 1990 to 2018. Bootstrapped model replicates were run to determine the statistical likelihoods of trends in flow-normalized concentrations and loads over the period of record and water years 2009-2018 for each constituent at each site. The data table contains the change in concentrations and loads and the numeric and descriptive statistical likelihoods associated with the trends over the two time periods for each constituent and site.
