The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS), in partnership with the U.S. National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program, mapped approximately 450 mi2 of the Talkeetna Mountains region of central Alaska at 1:50,000 scale over the course of six weeks in 2014. This area contains significant exposures of Late Triassic mafic volcanics and gabbro sills that have been the focus of region-wide exploration for the Strategic and Critical platinum-group elements (PGEs). The area also exposes numerous inactive and possibly active faults which project through the area of proposed hydropower development. The resulting geologic map offers an improved understanding of the geology, structural history, and mineral...

Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) has conducted 1:63,360-scale geologic mapping of the Sagavanirktok B-1 Quadrangle (640 square kmequivalent to four 7.5 minute quadrangles). This mapping project reinterprets micropaleontologic correlations for 17 Sagavanirktok Quadrangle wells, and reprocesses data from the one publicly-available seismic line. Surface geologic mapping, subsurface-to-surface stratigraphic age control, and seismic framework are required to reliably decipher the complex geology of this key area of the Brooks Range. Outcrops within the Sagavanirktok B-1 Quadrangle are the closest surface expressions of Prudhoe Bay source and reservoir rocks. This study yields critical petroleum-related...

This 1:50,000 scale geologic map describes the distribution of unconsolidated deposits, identifies local geologic hazards, and provides information about the depositional environment and basic engineering properties of common surficial-geologic materials in and around Shaktoolik, Alaska. Map units are the result of combined field observations and aerial imagery interpretation. A suite of local ground observations were collected over a two-week period in July 2011 by a helicopter-supported team of DGGS geologists and collaborators. Field investigations included soil test pits, sample collection, soil and rock description, oblique aerial photography, and documentation of landscape morphology.

The State of Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) produced a digital surface model (DSM) and an orthorectified aerial optical image mosaic (orthoimagery) of the Resurrection Bay watershed, surrounding the city of Seward in south-central Alaska. Aerial photographs and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data were collected on August 13, 2015, and were processed using Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetric techniques to create the DSM and orthoimagery. All data are projected in UTM Zone 6 North (meters) using the NAD83 (2011; EPSG 26906) horizontal datum and NAVD88 (Geoid12A; EPOCH 2010.00) vertical datum. The project was part of an ongoing investigation of the impact of flooding,...

During 2008-2010, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys continued a program, begun in 2006, of reconnaissance mapping of surficial geology in the proposed natural-gas pipeline corridor through the upper Tanana River valley, a 12-mi-wide (19.3-km-wide) area that straddles the Alaska Highway through the upper Tanana River valley from the western boundaries of the Tanacross B-6 and C-6 Quadrangles near the mouth of the Robertson River eastward to the eastern boundaries of the Tanacross A-4 and B-4 Quadrangles near Tetlin Junction. Mapping during 2008-2010 in the Tanacross Quadrangle linked with mapping of surficial geology completed in the Big Delta and Mt. Hayes quadrangles in 2006-2007. Surficial...

Aerial photographs of the coastline from Wales to Teller were collected on August 27, 2015 - August 28, 2015. The photographs were processed using Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetric techniques. Global Positioning System (GPS) checkpoints were collected via a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) survey conducted between August 15 and September 14, 2015. For the purposes of open access to elevation and orthoimagery datasets in coastal regions of Alaska, this collection is being released as a Raw Data File with an open end-user license. Orthoimages contain 4-band, 8-bit, unsigned raster data (red/green/blue/no data; file format-GeoTIFF; source-Fairbanks Fodar) with 20 cm GSD. No-data values are found...

In support of the proposed Susitna-Watana Hydroelectric Project, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) developed a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based geologic compilation of published and unpublished maps for twelve, inch-to-mile (1:63,360-scale) quadrangles encompassing the proposed hydroelectric project footprint, including the anticipated reservoir and surrounding area. DGGS geologists reviewed and analyzed existing geologic mapping for quality and completeness, and the maps were converted for use in GIS. The conversion process included scanning and georeferencing the original hard-copy map documents, creating a geodatabase, digitizing the geologic data, assigning attributes, and...

This report presents the findings of a geologic and geotechnical evaluation of a landslide at the Yukon River bridge (the E.L. Patton Bridge). The Yukon River bridge landslide occurred in fall 2012 between approximately 375 and 575 feet west of the bridge. Although there was no damage to the bridge foundation, the landslide's close proximity to the bridge and concerns over additional failures prompted multiple evaluations, including landslide documentation, drainage assessments, and geotechnical studies. This report was prepared to convey the general characteristics of the rock mass, characteristics of rock discontinuities, and the geomorphic expression of the 2012 landslide in the vicinity of the bridge. We determined...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This digital data set describes surficial geology of the conterminous United States. The data set was generated from a U.S. Geological Survey 1:7,500,000-scale map of surficial geology published as part of the U.S. Geological Survey National Atlas map series.

The Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) is committed to making its geologic products freely available online to a variety of consumers of geologic information and data. To this end, AZGS proposed two projects under the 2021-2022 National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) to increase the availability of its data. First, AZGS converted 32 of its older geologic maps that existed only as PDF scans into modern digital geodatabases. Each of these preserved maps was then archived and re-published at the National Digital Catalog, University of Arizona Campus Repository, Arizona Geological Survey Repository, and National Geologic Map Database. Second, AZGS participated in the annual Earth MRI workshop,...
