The National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) is a Congressionally mandated national archive of geoscience maps, reports, and stratigraphic information. The Geologic Mapping Act of 1992 and its Reauthorizations calls for the U.S. Geological Survey and the Association of American State Geologists (AASG) to cooperatively build this national archive, according to technical and scientific standards whose development is coordinated by the NGMDB. The NGMDB consists of a comprehensive set of publication citations, stratigraphic nomenclature, downloadable content in raster and vector formats, unpublished source information, and guidance on standards development. The NGMDB contains information on more than 110,000 maps and...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set represents the area of surficial geology types in square meters compiled for every catchment of NHDPlus for the conterminous United States. The source data set is the "Digital data set describing surficial geology in the conterminous US" (Clawges and Price, 1999). The NHDPlus Version 1.1 is an integrated suite of application-ready geospatial datasets that incorporates many of the best features of the National Hydrography...

The hydrogeology of the valley-fill aquifer system along a 32-mile reach of the Susquehanna River valley and adjacent areas was evaluated in eastern Broome and southeastern Chenango Counties, New York. The surficial geology, inferred ice-marginal positions, and distribution of stratified-drift aquifers were mapped from existing data. Ice-marginal positions, which represent pauses in the retreat of glacial ice from the region, favored...

The Lithologic Logs dataset includes state well records, and the well logs were standardized so that the lithologic information used a consistent terminology by Bayless and others (2017). The dataset contains 1,565,051 records, of which 746,568 are for wells that are used for withdrawing water.

The Sediment and Aquifer Characteristics dataset includes two, grid-based polygon feature classes. The first class uses a five-kilometer grid to show the density of lithologic logs available for analysis. The second class contains attributes that characterize either Quaternary sediment in the glaciated conterminous United States or aquifer material within it. The attributes are derived from lithologic logs obtained from boreholes and wells. The polygons were delineated by a constrained, kriging-based interpolation based on the distribution of map units in the source Surficial Geologic Units dataset using a grid-based algorithm to interpolate between the point data, as defined in the processing steps.

This spatial data layer is a cell-based Raster model characterizing the contribution of phosphorus (P) to streams from weathering and erosion of surficial geologic materials for the conterminous United States, and has been created as part of the SPARROW (Spatially Referenced Regressions on Watershed Attributes) water-quality model implementation. SPARROW provides estimates of total nitrogen and phosphorus load in surface waters from...

This tabular data set represents the area of surficial geology types in square meters compiled for every MRB_E2RF1 catchment of selected Major River Basins (MRBs, Crawford and others, 2006). The source data set is the "Digital data set describing surficial geology in the conterminous US" (Clawges and Price, 1999). The MRB_E2RF1 catchments are based on a modified version of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (USEPA) ERF1_2...

Surficial geology for the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain was compiled and interpreted from available published and unpublished sources. Formation contacts were interpolated across unmapped areas and inconsistencies in nomenclature, interpretation, and scale were resolved to the extent possible. For more information, see U. S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1680.

This dataset is a compilation of six databases described in Haj, A.E., Soller, D.R., Reddy, J.E., Kauffman, L.J., Yager, R.M., and Buchwald, C.A., 2018, Hydrogeologic framework for characterization and occurrence of confined and unconfined aquifers in quaternary sediments in the glaciated conterminous United States—A digital map compilation and database: U.S. Geological Survey Data Series 1090, 31 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ds1090. The six databases include: 1) Glacial Environments and Surficial Sediments (GESS) Geodatabase for the Glaciated, Conterminous United States, 2) Hydrogeologic Terranes for Glaciated Conterminous United States, 3) Bedrock Lithology for Glaciated Conterminous United States, 4) Groundwater...
