Note: T-3 Photographs - Roll B - Color slides April 1969. These photos were developed into Ektachrome slides in May of 1969. Some have deteriorated. Typed information accompanying photograph: Print only. Similar to A-1, but slightly different view. Lamont work trailer at early light, probably mid February, 1969. There were several weeks with dawn and dusk, but no daylight. Note: T-3 Photographs - Roll A - Color slides - February - March 1969. These photos were taken during February and March of 1969 and developed into Ektachrome slides in May of 1969. Some have deteroriated. When the slides were new some of them were printed as color prints. Some prints don't have matching slides. A few slides were copied as Kodacolor slides some time during the 1970s and there are some duplicate slides. The Kodacolor slides have not deteriorated. Some images are missing....

Typed information accompanying slides: Wreckage of abandoned huts, empty diesel drums, garbage, everything emerged out of the snow by the end of June. Typed information accompanying slides: DC-3 planes were used for regular flights to T-3. These had limited payloads because of the long distance (800 miles) from T-3 to Barrow. The plane on June 6, 1969 was not supposed to be the final plane before the summer season. The weather bureau employee shown in this photo was scheduled to leave on the flight, but either because of payload issues or possibly training needed for the weather bureau summer crew, he chose to wait for the next plane. The weather warmed suddenly and the final plane could not land on the T-3 runway. He was stranded on T-3 for four months until the first plane of the fal season landed on October 3, 1969. The T-3 (Fletcher's) Ice Island in the Arctic Ocean was the site of a scientific research station re-established by the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory starting in 1962. Starting in 1963, the USGS acquired marine heat flow data and coincident sediment cores at sites in Canada Basin, Nautilus Basin, Mendeleev Ridge, and Alpha Ridge as the ice island drifted in the Amerasian Basin. At least 584 heat flow penetrations were attempted, and data were reported at 356 of these. This dataset is the enhanced version of the original data table from Lachenbruch and others (2019; see cross-reference), incorporating additional information such as the probable dates of measurement, physiographic province and surficial geology...
Typed information accompanying slide: Ice lake in front of hydrohut. Stu with a packing crate boat. Stu worked for either University of Washington or University of Alaska in 1969. This series of photos took place on a sunny day in late June. There was a lake between the camp and the Lamont trailer. Stu found a packing crate and makeshift paddle and went boating. The T-3 (Fletcher's) Ice Island in the Arctic Ocean was the site of a scientific research station re-established by the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory starting in 1962. Starting in 1963, the USGS acquired marine heat flow data and coincident sediment cores at sites in Canada Basin, Nautilus Basin, Mendeleev Ridge, and Alpha Ridge as the ice island drifted in the Amerasian Basin. Radiogenic heat content in sediments can be an important contributor to measured heat flow. The USGS therefore measured radiogenic heat content in sediments recovered at 26 of the attempted/successful heat flow measurement sites using the laboratory methods available at the time. The T-3 (Fletcher's) Ice Island in the Arctic Ocean was the site of a scientific research station re-established by the Naval Arctic Research Laboratory starting in 1962. Lamont Geological Observatory (LGO; now Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory) and the U.S. Geological Survey, along with other organizations, ran research laboratories on the island during the 1960s and early 1970s as the island drifted in the Amerasian Basin. LGO compiled navigational data, measured gravity and magnetic data, and conducted seismic surveys to image the seafloor.
