A mineral resource assessment was performed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to assess the potential of undiscovered skarn-hosted tungsten resources in the Northern Rocky Mountain region of eastern Idaho and western Montana. This region has seen moderate tungsten trioxide (WO3) production in the past from a variety of mineralization styles including skarn, vein and replacement, and wolframite-quartz veins. The geology of the area is dominated by large plutons of Cretaceous to Tertiary age, emplaced into a belt of sedimentary rock ranging from Mesoproterozoic to Permian age, and affected by tectonism related to the Sevier and later Laramide orogenies. Known tungsten (W) skarn mineral sites are associated with...

The geology of an area of 660 square miles mostly in the northeastern corner of Tennessee and small adjacent areas in Virginia and North Carolina is the subject of this report. The region lies principally in the Unaka province, with extensions northwestward into the Appalachian Valley and southwestward into the Blue Ridge province. The report combines results of surveys made between 1941 and 1953 by the U. S. Geological Survey, the Tennessee Division of Geology, and the Tennessee Valley Authority, and is published in cooperation with the Tennessee Division of Geology. Northeasternmost Tennessee is a region of widespread mineralization and was formerly important for mineral production. Iron, manganese, and bauxite...

Geologic structure and isopach maps were constructed by interpreting over 19,890 trackline kilometers of co-located multichannel boomer, sparker and chirp seismic reflection profiles from the continental shelf of the Delmarva Peninsula, including Maryland and Virginia state waters. In this region, Brothers and others (2020) interpret 12 seismic units and 11 regional unconformities. They interpret the infilled channels as Late Tertiary and Quaternary courses of the Susquehanna, Potomac, Rappahannock, York and James Rivers and tributaries, in addition to a broad drainage system. These regional unconformities form a composite unconformity interpreted as the Quaternary-Tertiary (Q-T) unconformity. A depth to Tertiary...

This community is designed to link data acquired for alkalic igneous centers of the western United States in support of critical mineral resource investigations. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the Central Montana Alkalic Province, Northern Black Hills (South Dakota-Wyoming), Front Range of Colorado, and Great Plains margin in New Mexico and Texas. Datasets may include, but are not limited to, geochemical, geochronological, and isotopic data. Scientists interested in contributing to this community are asked to contact the manager(s).

The Cabin Branch and Cabin Creek (Cappy Avenue) outcrops are located along two small creeks in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The Cabin Branch outcrop contains exposures of silty sands of the Upper Cretaceous Severn Formation, and both outcrops contain Paleocene silty quartz and glauconitic sands of the Danian Brightseat Formation and highly fossiliferous glauconitic quartz sands of the Selandian Aquia Formation. Data from these two locations were generated in order to designate a Principal Reference Section for the Danian age Brightseat Formation. The Cabin Branch outcrop consists of disjunct exposures along an approximately 0.4-mile section of the creek. At the nearby Cabin Creek (Cappy Avenue) outcrop a more...

Alaska Earthquake March 27, 1964. Debris avalanche on the peninsula between Ugak and Kiliuda Bays. A slide of Tertiary rocks from the 1,500-foot-high peak at upper right flowed into the uninhabited valley below at about 300-foot altitude where it spread out as a debris lobe roughly 1,500 feet across. The narrow streak of light-colored debris in the lower right corner is part of the slide mass that overflowed the near flank of the landslide scar. 1964. Plate 2, U.S. Geological Survey Professional paper 543-D.

This digital dataset was created as part of a U.S. Geological Survey hydrologic resource assessment and development of an integrated numerical hydrologic model of the hydrologic system of the Upper Colorado River Basin, an extensive region covering approximately 412,000 square kilometers in five states: Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. As part of this larger study, the USGS developed this digital dataset of geologic data and a three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework model (3D HFM) that define the elevation, thickness, and extent of seven hydrogeologic units in the Upper Colorado River Basin. The hydrogeologic setting of the Colorado Plateau consists of thick Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic aquifers,...
