This map illustrates extents and types of unconsolidated deposits and bedrock in the Big Delta A-4 Quadrangle, Alaska. This map is based on field observations begun by P�w� in 1949 and by Reger in 1976. Unit characteristics and extents were determined during field visits and by interpreting 1:40,000-scale black-and-white aerial photographs taken in August 1949 and 1:63,360-scale, false-color infrared aerial photographs taken in July 1978, August 1980, and August 1981.

Between 27 and 11 kyr ago, during the last major (Naptowne) glaciation, the northwestern and western Kenai Peninsula and the Cook Inlet trough were covered by ice except for local nunataks and small refugia, like the Caribou Hills. Landforms related to four glacial stades are recognized and paleogeographic maps document ice limits, drainage systems, glacial-impounded lakes, and glaciomarine terraces. Numerous multidisciplinary studies of glacial, vegetation, and insect histories document Holocene climatic changes.

An intrusion into Kīlauea’s upper East Rift Zone during June 17–19, 2007, during the 1983–2018 Pu‘u‘ō‘ō eruption, led to widespread ground cracking and a small (~1,525 m3) eruption on the northeast flank of the Kānenuiohamo cone, about 6 km upslope from the Pu‘u‘ō‘ō vent. Transmitted and induced very-low-frequency (VLF) magnetic fields were measured with a handheld VLF receiver along transects spanning the dike trace, and zones of ground cracking related to the intrusion were mapped. Kasatochi is a small, isolated island volcano in the center of the Aleutian Island chain. It consists of a roughly circular cone approximately 3 km in diameter with a lake-filled central crater that is 1.2 km in diameter and extends from the highest point on the island to sea level. The oldest unit recognized is a thick series of mid-Pleistocene glaciovolcanic deposits consisting of autobrecciated lava, lahars, and volumetrically minor lava masses that we believe to have been emplaced underneath a regional ice cap. This unit is unconformably overlain by several massive Holocene lavas, above which lies a thick sequence of latest-Holocene pyroclastic deposits likely deposited during the crater-forming eruption. Okmok volcano, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, explosively erupted over a five-week period between July 12 and August 23, 2008. The eruption was predominantly phreatomagmatic, producing fine-grained tephra that covered most of northeastern Umnak Island. The eruption had a maximum Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 4, with eruption column heights up to 16 km during the opening phase. Several craters and a master tuff cone formed in the caldera as a result of phreatomagmatic explosions and accumulated tephra-fall and surge deposits. A total of 100 samples were collected from two proximal sections of Keanakākoʻi, Tephra unit D deposits. Samples were analyzed on Microtrac CAMSIZER® P4 and X2 instruments for grain size and shape data in the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) tephra lab. Data release includes sample descriptions, half phi grain size distributions, and statistical output from DECOLOG deconvolution modeling of grain size distributions. Grain size is reported using the sieve compatible Xcmin parameter (CAMSIZER® manual, 2020). Most of the data is from published papers, and some of it is unpublished data from AVO. It is contain analyses for approximately 13,000 samples. This dataset includes wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) major-oxide and trace-element whole-rock analyses, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) trace-element whole-rock analyses, and glass analyses by electron microprobe of scoria and lava samples from the Kamakaiʻa Hills of the Southwest Rift Zone of Kīlauea volcano, Island of Hawaiʻi. Whole-rock chemical analyses were performed at the Hamilton Analytical Laboratory at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, USA, whereas glass chemical analyses were performed at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California, USA.
The Halfway House site in interior Alaska is arguably the most studied loess deposit in northwestern North America. The site contains a complex paleomagnetic and paleoenvironmental record, but has lacked the robust chronologic control that would allow its full potential to be exploited. The 2018 lower East Rift Zone eruption of Kilauea Volcano began in the late afternoon of 3 May, with fissure 1 opening and erupting lava onto Mohala Street in the Leilani Estates subdivision, part of the lower Puna District of the Island of Hawai'i. For the first week of the eruption, relatively viscous lava flowed only within a kilometer (0.6 miles) of the fissures within Leilani Estates, before activity shifted downrift (east-northeast) and out of the subdivision during mid-May. Around 18 May, activity along the lower East Rift Zone intensified, and fluid lava erupting at higher effusion rates from the downrift fissures reached the ocean within two days. Visible/near-infrared (VNIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectral library composed of twenty natural tephra samples from ten volcanic sources that span a range of compositions and components. The bulk, glass, and mineral phase compositions of each sample have been measured and VNIR and MIR spectra from four size fractions of each sample were collected. The VNIR spectral library has been expanded (ed. 2) to twenty-two samples.

The 2009 eruption of Redoubt Volcano included 19 major tephra-producing explosions. Mass per unit area (MPUA) ash fall sampling of the resulting deposits allowed us to create isomass contours of the ash fall. This dataset contains the vector digital shapefiles of the ash fall contours for the explosive events. In addition, a point digital shapefile is included that describes more than 400 ash fall samples that were collected. Mount Chiginagak is a hydrothermally active volcano on the Alaska Peninsula, approximately 170 km south-southwest of King Salmon, Alaska. This small stratovolcano, approximately 8 km in diameter, has erupted through Tertiary to Permian sedimentary and igneous rocks. The eruptive products of Chiginagak volcano record a history of chiefly andesite lava flows and associated block-and-ash flows. The oldest lavas exposed are Pleistocene in age and are found everywhere around the edifice except in the northeast sector, where Holocene lava flows dominate the landscape. Holocene activity has covered the northeast flank with rubbly-topped andesite lava flows that extend as far as 4.6 km from their source vent at the summit...

At 11:21 p.m. (Hawaii Standard Time [HST]) on November 27, 2022, Mauna Loa volcano on the Island of Hawaiʻi started erupting from fissures at its summit caldera, Mokuʻāweoweo. This was followed shortly afterwards by the opening of a segment of fissures in the direction of the Southwest Rift Zone. These were mostly within the structural boundary of the caldera, so their location is denoted as ‘South Caldera,’ with the exception of a short fissure that extended into the uppermost Southwest Rift Zone. By November 28, activity had shifted to four fissures that opened in the upper Northeast Rift Zone (Lynn and others, 2023).
