This layer identifies terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats associated with species of greatest conservation need as described in Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South region of the United States. Condition Index scores are assigned on a per-grid-cell basis at 30-meter resolution. Condition Index scores are derived from seven attributes related to desired condition metrics for specific habitats: 1) whether a targeted habitat is present, 2) patch size, 3) patch configuration or distance to nearest patch, 4) a site condition metric, such as basal area for forested landscapes, 5) a second site condition metric, such as overstory canopy cover for forested landscapes, 6) if targeted habitat not present, potential for...

This layer summarizes the Mid-South Terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats Condition Index based on Condition Index Scores alone. Some users may be interested in the scores generated by the project and their habitat management implications. The symbology and map colors in this dataset represent that information. For descriptions of existing and potential habitat and per-pixel habitat condition and landscape configuration inputs to these scores, consult the Mid-South Terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats Condition Index with Barcode data layer, for which the map colors describe existing Broadly Defined Habitats.

Land managers have incorporated threats to biodiversity for nearly two decades, but very few efforts have included threats from future conditions and fewer still have assessed vulnerability to climate change. This project will address two themes: 1) providing foundational information about habitat fragmentation and connectivity and 2) identifying the degree of vulnerability of key habitats to climate change. For development of understanding broadextent, a landscape-level pattern of climate change is an important complement to approaches to estimate rangeshifts for certain key focal species. Ecological system types (i.e. coarsefilters) are widely used in conservation planning because they contain valuable resources...
