The Critical Minerals in Archived Mine Samples Database (CMDB) contains chemistry and geologic information for historic ore and ore-related rock samples from mineral deposits in the United States. In addition, the database contains samples from archetypal deposits from 27 other countries in North America, South America, Asia, Africa and Europe. Samples were obtained from archived ore collections under the U.S. Geological Survey's project titled "Quick Assessment of Rare and Critical Metals in Ore Deposits: A National Assessment" (2008 to 2013) in an effort to begin an assessment of the Nations' previously mined ore deposits for critical minerals. Mineralized and altered rock samples were provided by the Colorado...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides whole rock major, minor, and trace element geochemical data from the fluorine-rich Mount Emmons-Redwell porphyry molybdenum (Climax-type) deposit (Mt. Emmons-Redwell deposit), located approximately 5.6 km (3.5 mi) northwest of Crested Butte, Colorado. The Mt. Emmons-Redwell deposit partly underlies Redwell Basin on the northwest flank of Mount Emmons in the west-central region of the Colorado Mineral Belt. Mineralization of the Mt. Emmons-Redwell deposit occurs at depth as vein, veinlet, stockwork, and fracture-hosted Climax-type mineralization [308 Mt at 0.32% Mo (Galey, 1978; Guarnera and Anderson, 2007)], and is associated with the Mt. Emmons igneous complex....

In June, 1989, the U.S. Bureau of Mines, undertook a 9 -day evaluation of the tin resource potential of the Sleitat Mountain tin deposit. Significant tin -tungsten mineralization is associated with quartz- topaz -white mica -tourmaline greisen alteration of a multi -unit, 57 Ma, peraluminous, granite stock which intrudes Cretaceous Kuskokwim Group flysch deposits. The granite comprises marginal biotite -, intermediate biotite muscovite-, and central zinnwaldite- granite units, interpreted as a zoned alteration system. Major vein mineralization is confined to two east -west -trending zones of steeply oriented tabular lenses of greisen interleaved with mildly altered granite. Cassiterite is the dominant ore mineral...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides the descriptions of 11 U.S. sites that include mineral regions, mines, and mineral occurrences that contain enrichments of niobium (Nb). To be included in this data release, a site must have a contained resource and (or) past production of Nb metal greater than 10,000 metric tons, which was the approximate consumption of Nb in the U.S. in 2019 (U.S. Geological Survey, 2020). Sites in this dataset occur in Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Nebraska, and Texas. Niobium primarily occurs in oxide minerals of the pyrochlore group, which are most commonly found in carbonatites and alkaline granite-syenite complexes. Globally, the largest Nb deposits occur in Brazil and...

Barker, J.C., 1991, Investigation of tin-rare earth element placers in the Ray River watershed: U.S. Bureau of Mines Open-File Report 34-91, 63 p., 1 sheet, scale 1:63,360.
Tin mineralization at the Won prospect was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in July 1989 and June 1990 as part of an ongoing investigation of the tin resource potential in Alaska. The Won prospect is located 40 miles north of McGrath, Alaska. The tin deposits at the Won prospect are associated with several northwest trending, moderately dipping breccia -vein structures developed in tourmaline- and quartz -altered hornfels. Tin occurs in brecciated hornfels with cassiterite matrix, cassiterite druse on fracture surfaces of open spaced, crackle breccia, and as disseminated grains in quartz veins containing minor silver, arsenic, copper, antimony, and zinc mineralization. Based upon limited sampling, and estimated...

The Tofty mining district, near Manley Hot Springs in north-central Alaska, has been the scene of placer gold mining since 1906 and has produced more than 100,000 tr oz of gold and several hundred tons of byproduct tin, in the form of placer cassiterite. Although open -cut mining methods are currently employed, drift-mining methods were formerly utilized to mine the gold- and tin-bearing gravels. As part of the current Bureau of Mines Alaska -wide assessment of critical and strategic minerals, splits of concentrate samples collected in the 1950's from 11 tailings piles representative of the presently inactive Tofty drift mines were re-analyzed in 1983 for tantalum and columbium (niobium). Most of these concentrates...

Mineralization at the Win prospect was investigated by the Bureau of Mines in June, 1990 and 1991, as part of an ongoing investigation of the tin, niobium, and tantalum resource potential in Alaska. The Win prospect is located twenty miles northwest of McGrath, AK. Mineral deposits consist of polymetallic sulfide and quartz- cassiterite mineralized vein and breccia vein systems within a quartz -tourmaline (dravite) -altered hornfels aureole that appears to be related to a small dacite stock and dikes. Host rocks for most of the veins are altered, Late Cretaceous Kuskokwim Group flyschoid rocks. The dacite is a calc- alkalic, high Ca, low K, biotite, magnetite, garnet -bearing coarse -grained intrusive. Mafic and...

This data release provides descriptions of more than 100 mining districts, mines, and mineral occurrences (deposits and prospects) within the United States that are reported to contain enrichments of rhenium (Re). These mineral occurrences include mined deposits, exploration prospects, and other occurrences with notable concentrations of rhenium. The inclusion of a particular mineral occurrence in this database is not meant to imply that it has economic potential. Rather, these occurrences were included to capture the distribution and characteristics of the known, reported rhenium occurrences in the United States. Rhenium is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust. Most rhenium occurs in the mineral molybdenite,...
