ABSTRACT: Ground water, of relatively good quality, occurs though-out southeastern Montana's Tongue River basin and can be procured cheaply and easily. The widespread occurrence of springs and the de velopment of shallow aquifers enables settlement to occur away from perennial streams and allows for extensive grazing of the range. Ground water m the Tongue River basin occurs in five aquifers ranging from shallow alluvium to the extremely deep Madison Group. Coal beds of the Fort Union Formation contain significant quantities of good quality ground water. The USGS and SEO Streamflow Gage Locations dataset with locations where ungaged natural flow estimates were taken contains the latitude-longitude locations for selected gages within the Powder/Tongue River Basin Planning Area. This dataset contains the locations only for those USGS and SEO gages that were used in the Powder/Tongue River Basin Plan to model available flow. The locations where natural flow was estimated for purposes of modeling available flow are also included.

Two unique datasets were gathered to document whether flow management for hydropower affects the abundance and diversity of aquatic insect assemblages. The first dataset was collected in Grand Canyon from 2012-2014 by citizen scientists rafting the Colorado River. Simple light traps were set out each night in camp and used to capture the adult life stages of aquatic insects that emerged from the Colorado River. Three aquatic insect taxa were captured in sufficient abundance to analyze statistically including midges (order Diptera, family Chironomidae), micro-caddisflies (order Trichoptera, family Hydroptilidae), and blackflies (order Diptera, family Simuliidae, principally Simulium arcticum). This dataset contains the 14 major reservoirs in the Powder/Tongue River Basin Planning Area. All surface water storage in structures containing more than 50 acre-feet of storage or more than 20 feet high (meeting the minimum standards for inclusion in the Dam Safety database) were initially selected. These selection criteria produced a set of 189 surface water storage facilities. The State Engineer's Office Water Division Two commissioners agreed that a further set of criteria should be introduced to provide a list from which the dams of particular significance to the basin could be developed. This dataset contains the irrigated lands mapped for the Powder/Tongue River Basin Plan. All man induced irrigation or subirrigation was delineated. Natural subirrigated fields were not delineated unless some benefit was being received from a man made system. Data were collected to monitor geochemistry before and after an injection designed to stimulate microbial methanogenesis in the shallow Flowers-Goodale coal bed, near Birney in southeastern Montana. Waters from wells completed in the Flowers-Goodale, Nance, Knobloch, and Terret coalbeds at the Birney Test Site were sampled. Geochemical characterization of the water included non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon, acetate, major anions and cations, extractable hydrocarbons, and trace metals.

Scouring of streambed material surrounding bridge structures is a leading cause of bridge failure in the United States. Damages resulting from bridge failure oftentimes lead to financial burdens and loss of life. Contains approximately 3111 irrigation water right permits on file with the Wyoming State Engineer's Office (SEO). They range in dates from the late 1800s to 2001. The water rights attribution task entails identifying and describing the water rights attached to the irrigated lands polygons. This task is included in the river basin planning process for two reasons. First, knowing the water rights attached to the polygons provides additional understanding of the source of supply and the irrigation systems that deliver water to the polygons.
