N limitation to primary production and other ecosystem processes is widespread. To understand the causes and distribution of N limitation, we must understand the controls of biological N fixation. The physiology of this process is reasonably well characterized, but our understanding of ecological controls is sparse, except in a few cultivated ecosystems. We review information on the ecological controls of N fixation in free-living cyanobacteria, vascular plant symbioses, and heterotrophic bacteria, with a view toward developing improved conceptual and simulation models of ecological controls of biological N fixation. A model (Howarth et al. 1999) of cyanobacterial fixation in lakes (where N fixation generally increases...

This data release includes metadata and tabular data documenting the reproductive demography of the Samoan swallowtail butterfly (Papilio godeffroyi), including rates of parasitism by two species of Ooencyrtus wasp. Data was collected at approximately monthly surveys of marked host trees (Micromelum minutum) at eight forest stands, mostly in or adjacent to the National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), Tutuila Island, during 2013-2014. One stand was located near the western tip of Tutuila, outside NPSA. Data sets document: (1) sampling effort for swallowtail specimens during monthly surveys of host trees; (2) final life cycle stage achieved by swallowtail specimens brought into the laboratory for rearing or postmortem...

These geospatial data sets were developed as part of a new analysis of all known current and historical rain gages in the Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico published in the journal article Murphy, S.F., Stallard, R.F., Scholl, M.A., Gonzalez, G., and Torres-Sanchez, A.J., 2017, Reassessing rainfall in the Luquillo Mountains, Puerto Rico: Local and global ecohydrological implications: PLOS One 12(7): e0180987, p. 1-26, https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0180987. That article provides a revised map of mean annual precipitation developed using elevation regression functions and residual interpolation, and that map is presented here in a raster file. Most previous forest- and watershed-wide estimates of precipitation...

This data release includes metadata and tabular data documenting the reproductive response of the Samoan swallowtail butterfly (Papilio godeffroyi) to characteristics of its host plant (Micromelum minutum) and habitat. Data was collected at approximately monthly surveys of marked host trees at eight sites, mostly in or adjacent to the National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), Tutuila Island, during 2013-2014. One site was sampled near the western tip of Tutuila, outside NPSA. Data sets document: (1) physical and habitat characteristics of individual host trees; (2) phenology of individual host trees; (3) physical and habitat characteristics of host tree stands; (4) sampling effort during monthly surveys of host trees...
