This dataset is a polygon coverage of the resource areas of the Lower Kittanning coal zone. The polygons are subdivided into 2 categories: resource areas inside the outcrop, and areas either too thin, outside the outcrop, or beyond data collection limits. The coal zone must contain at least 14 inches of coal to be a resource. This spatial data set of the Lower Kittanning coal bed and known mined areas is one of many Geographic Information System (GIS) products of the National Coal Assessment that is being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with State geological surveys and other Federal and State agencies. The Lower Kittanning coal bed is an important economic coal in the northern part of the...

This dataset is a polygon coverage of counties limited to the extent of the Lower Kittanning coal bed resource areas and attributed with statistics on these coal quality parameters: ash yield (percent), sulfur (percent), SO2 (lbs per million Btu), calorific value (Btu/lb), arsenic (ppm) content and mercury (ppm) content. The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C. The attributes were generated from public data found in the geochemical dataset found in Chap. E, Appendix 2, Disc 1, as well as some additional proprietary data. Please see the metadata file found in Chap. E, Appendix 3, Disc 1, for more detailed information on the geochemical attributes....

The Pittsburgh coal bed is composed of regionally persistent divisions- a roof division (coals and shales) and a lower division, referred to as the "main bench". This dataset is a polygon coverage of the elevation of the top of the Pittsburgh Coal bed main bench, in feet above MSL. It was produced by gridding (producing 300 meter cells) 7,101 point-source data mainly from the National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS) of the USGS, using ISM (Version 7.1) software. The grid was subsequently contoured in 50-ft intervals and imported to ARC/INFO. The elev_st item for each polygon reflects a value halfway between the bounding contour lines. Coverage name: c9024st (024 is the bed code assigned to the Pittsburgh Coal...

This dataset is a polygon coverage of counties limited to the extent of the Upper Freeport coal bed resource areas and attributed with statistics on these coal quality parameters: ash yield (percent), sulfur (percent), SO2 (lbs per million Btu), calorific value (Btu/lb), arsenic (ppm) content and mercury (ppm) content. The file has been generalized from detailed geologic coverages found elsewhere in Professional Paper 1625-C. The attributes were generated from public data found in the geochemical dataset found in Chap. D, Appendix 8, Disc 1, as well as some additional proprietary data. This dataset is a polygon coverage of the resource areas of the Lower Kittanning coal zone. This dataset is the digital compilation of geologic and resource maps provided mostly by State geologic surveys and depicts the projected area of occurrence of the Lower Kittanning coal bed. The Lower Kittanning coal bed is in Ohio, West Virginia, western Pennsylvania, and western Maryland and is an important economic coal bed in the northern part of the Appalachian Basin. It is of additional importance because it is one of the coal beds that has potential for coalbed methane development within the Allegheny Group throughout most of the Appalachian foreland basin in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland. This file...
