Site 42SA20286 is an open lithic scatter located on the west bank of Salt Creek in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. The site is considered eligible for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places by consensus with the Utah State Historic Preservation Officer. In September 1989, subsurface investigations were conducted in and near areas of the site to be impacted by bridge construction. Three geomorphic units were identified within the site and can be differentiated by depositional conditions. The lowest unit cannot be reliably dated. A single radiocarbon sample from the middle unit tentatively places it within the Neoglacial or Late Archaic. The uppermost unit and surface deposits...

This final report documents the results of archeological inventory, excavation, and analysis of prehistoric cultural resources within a 45-kilometer (28-mile) long corridor in the Island-in-the-Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, Utah. During three field seasons of survey, mapping, and excavation in 1983-1985, the research team recorded 322 artifact scatters, plotted 90,000 prehistoric artifacts and 250 historic items, completed 600 one-square-meter test pits, and conducted 10 block excavations. Block excavations at two locations in Gray's Pasture revealed a plant processing/hunting field camp (42SA16858) and a disturbed pithouse (42SA8506). Associated features and materials included a puddled clay-lined...

This report summarizes the results of an intensive archeological survey of specific portions of Natural Bridges National Monument. The fieldwork was conducted by personnel from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in cooperation with the Midwest Archeological Center (MWAC), National Park Service, Lincoln, Nebraska. Forty archeological sites and 73 isolated occurrences were recorded within 850 acres surveyed during July, 1987. Most of these were on the mesa interior between White and Armstrong Canyons at elevations between 1,860 meters (6,100 feet) and 1,982 meters (6,500 feet). A fairly dense pinyon/juniper forest currently covers this portion of northeastern Cedar Mesa. The purpose of the survey was to locate archeological...
Planned construction and supporting activities in the Canyonlands Needles District, Utah, would adversely affect approximately 57,000 m2 of cultural resources. This multiyear archeological project sought to determine the extent and nature of all cultural resources that would suffer negative impacts, to determine potential impacts, to identify research contexts for these resources, to evaluate their potential eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, to determine mitigation needs, and to conduct necessary data recovery. Field investigations included pedestrian survey, testing, excavation, and surface collection. In and near the potential impact areas, 24 sites had been located by prior...
