Brackish groundwater (BGW), defined for this assessment as having a dissolved-solids concentration between 1,000 and 10,000 milligrams per liter is an unconventional source of water that may offer a partial solution to current (2016) and future water challenges. In support of the National Water Census, the U.S. Geological Survey has completed a BGW assessment to gain a better understanding of the occurrence and character of BGW resources of the United States as an alternative source of water. Analyses completed as part of this assessment relied on previously collected data from multiple sources, and no new data were collected. One of the most important contributions of this assessment was the creation of a database...

The Protected natural areas of the U.S. Virgin Islands, compiled and identified by the U.S. Virgin Islands Gap Analysis Project (USVIGAP), display terrestrial protected natural areas designated for natural resource conservation in the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as areas with government regulation that have the potential to protect natural resources. The protection of natural areas is an essential step in conserving biodiversity and maintaining ecosystem services. The benefits and services provided by natural areas include clean water and air, sustainable wildlife populations and habitats, stable slopes and productive soils, genetic reservoirs, recreational opportunities and spiritual refugia. These benefits are...

The U.S. Virgin Islands 2007 land cover, created as part of the USVIGAP analysis project supported by the USGS, is a forty-nine class land cover classification. The USVIGAP land cover is based primarily on the unsupervised classification of five Earth Observing 1 (EO-1) Advanced Land Imager (ALI) scenes acquired in 2007. The ALI scenes were processed, segmented into geoclimatic zones and classified individually. ASTER and Landsat 7 ETM+ imagery from 2008 and 2009 were used to complete areas of no data resulting from cloud and cloud shadow in the initial ALI classification. The land cover was created through the use of the spectral information derived from the satellite imagery and ancillary data such as geology,...

This part of the data release presents projected flooding extent polygon (flood masks) and flooding depth points (flood points) shapefiles based on wave-driven total water levels for the Territory of the U.S. Virgin Islands (the islands of Saint Croix, Saint John, and Saint Thomas). For each island there are 8 associated flood mask and flood depth shapefiles: one for each four nearshore wave energy return periods (rp; 10-, 50-, 100-, and 500-years) and both with (wrf) and without (worf) the presence of coral reefs. Flooding depth point data are also presented as a comma-separated value (.csv) text file.

This database contains a comprehensive inventory of geologic (coral, coral reef, limestone, and sediment) cores and samples collected, analyzed, published, and/or archived by, or in collaboration with, the U.S. Geological Survey St. Petersburg Coastal and Marine Science Center (USGS SPCMSC). The SPCMSC Geologic Core and Sample Database includes geologic cores and samples collected beginning in the 1970s to present day, from study sites across the world. This database can be accessed through the CoreViewer 3.0 ArcOnline web mapping application, linked below. A copy of the data can also be downloaded from the web mapping application and the metadata is accessible through a link in the header of the application, as...

Ecoregions of the United States, developed by Robert G. Bailey of the Forest Service Inventory and Monitoring Institute. From metadata: this data set shows ecoregions, which are ecosystems of regional extent, in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Four levels of detail are included to show a hierarchy of ecosystems. The largest ecosystems are domains, which are groups of related climates and which are differentiated based on precipitation and temperature. Divisions represent the climates within domains and are differentiated based on precipitation levels and patterns as well as temperature. Divisions are subdivided into provinces, which are differentiated based on vegetation or other natural...
