Cell maps for each oil and gas assessment unit were created by the USGS to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in an assessment unit or province. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, dry, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown. The mining claim density data of federal lands in Oregon are combined with the digital Oregon Public Land Survey (PLS) to create a digital map of the density of mine claims in Open-File Report 99-541. The mining claim density data of federal lands in Oregon was one of 13 western states released in Open-File Report 99-325. The database for Oregon was converted to an Arc/Info file and connected with the PLS by an Arc/Info relate. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The coverages were created using the gridded data available fromthis ftp site. Most of the gridded data for the United States is ata spacing of 0.1 degrees latitude and longitude. The higherresolution data available for California, Nevada, and part ofArizona and Utah were used for both the U.S. and Western U.S. maps.The gridded data for this area is at a spacing of 0.05 degreeslatitude and longitude.
