Survey of geology, geologic materials, and geologic hazards in proposed access corridors in selected quadrangles, Alaska

As part of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) effort to make final recommendations of federal land parcels to be considered for selection by the State of Alaska according to provisions of the Statehood Act, a decision was made to identify and evaluate potential access corridors. Corridor maps were compiled for a total of 78 quadrangles throughout Alaska. This map suite shows relevant geologic information at a scale of 1:250,000 for 10-mile-wide corridors straddling centerlines for proposed access routes throughout Alaska. Spatially referenced oblique aerial photography of the Eastern Norton Sound shoreline, July 2011

In July 2011, a helicopter-based crew photographed approximately 180 miles of shoreline along the eastern edge of Norton Sound, from Cape Denbigh to south of Unalakleet, AK. During this flight 2,180 oblique aerial photographs were collected and spatially referenced using a Garmin Dakota 20, handheld GPS. The communities of Unalakleet and Shaktoolik lie along the flight-line of this project.

LiDAR data for Unalakleet, Alaska, collected in October 27, 2005

This report is a summary of a LiDAR data collection over the community of Unalakleet, in the Norton Sound region of Alaska. The original data were collected on October 27, 2005 by AeroMetric, Inc., under contract by Rodney P. Kinney and Associates, Inc. The complete, classified LiDAR dataset was purchased by the State of Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys in 2013 in support of coastal vulnerability mapping efforts. For the purposes of open access to LiDAR datasets in coastal regions of Alaska, this collection is being released as a Raw Data File with an open end-user license.

Preliminary database of Quaternary vents in Alaska

The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) uses an informal set of names for about 140 'volcanoes.' Some names refer to large, complex volcanic centers, while others indicate only a specific cone. This publication expands the list of 140 named volcanoes to include all volcanic vents where magma has reached the surface over the past 2.6 million years. This database of all known (published, or unpublished with permission) Quaternary volcanic vents was developed to better describe the nature and character of Quaternary volcanism in Alaska and specifically to aid in the discussion of spatial and temporal patterns of Alaska volcanism. Coastal hazard field investigations in response to the November 2011 Bering Sea storm, Norton Sound, Alaska

On November 8, 2011, an extra-tropical cyclone with a low pressure of 945 millibars developed over the Bering Sea and moved northeast across the western coast of Alaska. This large storm brought high winds (gusts of up to 85 mph) to the entire region and a storm surge of approximately 3 meters to parts of Norton Sound. The storm caused extensive flooding in the lower portion of Golovin on the afternoon of November 9, 2011. A team of Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) scientists visited Golovin on November 15, 2011, to document peak water levels, runup elevations, and inundation extents caused by this event.
