Twenty-four piston cores (and associated trigger cores) were collected from the source zone of the Currituck Landslide Complex and upper slope adjacent to Baltimore Canyon by the U.S. Geological Survey and the University of Rhode Island Department of Ocean Engineering during an eight-day cruise aboard the R/V Hugh R. Sharp in September/October of 2012. These cores were analyzed for evidence of seafloor mass transport processes, with an emphasis on constraining the age and shallow stratigraphy of the landslide complex. Sedimentological and geotechnical characterization of the cores was carried out through whole core imaging and description, followed by analysis of discrete samples at the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and...

Variability in sediment properties with depth and the thickness of individual sedimentary layers are critical determinants of seabed acoustic response. The New England Mud Patch (NEMP), located south of Cape Cod, is an unusual feature on the U.S. Continental Shelf in that it is composed of fine-grained sediment layers containing a relatively-homogeneous mix of sand, silt, and clay-sized particles bounded by more typical sandy shelf sediments. The unique characteristics and nature of this deposit is due to a derivation of sediments that have been transported to, and deposited in, a basal bowl-shaped depression since the last glacial maximum. Ninety-two piston, vibra-, and gravity cores with a maximum length of 8.2...

Some of the highest grade uranium (U) deposits in the United States are hosted by solution-collapse breccia pipes in the Grand Canyon region of northern Arizona. These structures are named for their vertical, pipe-like shape and the broken rock (breccia) that fills them. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of these structures exist. Not all of the breccia pipes are mineralized; only a small percentage of the identified breccia pipes are known to contain an economic uranium deposit. An unresolved question is how many undiscovered U-bearing breccia pipes of this type exist in northern Arizona, in the region sometimes referred to as the “Arizona Strip”. Two principal questions remain regarding the breccia pipe U deposits...

This Geologic Map Schema (GeMS) database contains all the geologic map information used to publish the Preliminary Bedrock Geologic Map of the Blythe 30' x 60' Quadrangle, California and Arizona, U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2021-1097. The Blythe 30' x 60' quadrangle in southeastern California and southwestern Arizona displays complex geology that includes Mesozoic contractional deformation, metamorphism, and magmatism and Cenozoic extensional deformation and magmatism. The scope of the present map is limited to bedrock units of Miocene and older age because the younger deposits have not been mapped in sufficient detail across the quadrangle to support a systematic compilation. This geologic map database...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release represents the Oklahoma component of the National Water-Well Database (NWWDB). The NWWDB is a compilation of water-well records from state-managed databases that have been standardized to a common format for consistency across state and administrative boundaries. Water-well completion reports that are submitted to permitting state agencies by licensed drillers constitute a large source of hydrogeologic information, including the locations and distribution of water wells, construction materials and completion depths, lithologic logs, groundwater levels, and the results of pumping or aquifer tests. Standardization was performed based on a USGS profile of the Open Geospatial...

This geologic map depicts and briefly describes geologic units underlying Petroglyph National Monument and immediately adjacent areas in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The Monument is underlain dominantly by Quaternary basalts of the Albuquerque Volcanoes volcanic field, a series of basin-filling volcanic flows and associated vents from a monogenetic volcanic highland along the eastern margin of the Llano de Albuquerque. This compilation builds on data of previously published geologic maps and reports but includes new interpretive synthesis of volcanic stratigraphy and a unified representation of Quaternary surficial deposits overlying volcanic deposits within the Monument and areas immediately adjacent. This geologic...

To provide daily mean streamflow values at ungaged (partial-record) sites within the Yankee Fork Salmon River watershed, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, used discharge measurements at three partial-record sites and related those measurements to a nearby USGS real-time streamgage (index site). Daily mean streamflow was estimated by developing a regression relationship between each partial-record site and the index site for water years 2012-2019. These data are intended to provide daily mean streamflow estimates at partial-record sites as part of a larger study (Clark and others, 2021) to estimate sediment loading for each site.

Grain size distribution and bulk density are reported for sediment push cores from two flooded agricultural tracts, Little Holland Tract and Liberty Island, in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California. Push core samples were collected from 17 sites by the U.S. Geological Survey in June 2016. Each core was analyzed at multiple depths to investigate variations in particle sizes with depth below the sediment surface. The same sites were sampled previously in 2014 (https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/5a73a58fe4b0a9a2e9e172cf). These data provide insight into the variation of particle size distributions in space, bed depth, and time.

Samples were analyzed using the handheld portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analyzer as part of a study examining the occurrence chromium and of natural and anthropogenic hexavalent Chromium, Cr(VI) in groundwater. Data will be used to estimate naturally-occurring background Cr(VI) concentrations upgradient, near the plume margins, and downgradient from a mapped Cr(VI) contamination plume near Hinkley, CA (Izbicki and Groover, 2016). Relative concentrations for 18 elements of interest were measured on the less than 2mm and sized- fraction splits of the 36 field samples. Greater than 20 percent of the samples analyzed using pXRF also have Contract Laboratory results for comparison. These pXRF results are part of...
