Zone 24 (covering small portions of Michigan and New York) of the contiguous U.S. percent developed imperviousness dataset from NLCD 2006, released 2/16/2011. The full dataset is divided into 25 zones, which can all be found in the NLCD 2006 gallery. The National Land Cover Database products are created through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium. This data contains land cover (mostly vegetation types) for the entire state of Wyoming at 1:100,000 scale. Attribute fields describe primary and secondary land cover, crown closure, wetlands, disturbance and other important land cover types occuring within the polygon. Only the fields for primary land cover and percentage of each polygon occupied by that land cover are complete in the coverage, but other attribute fields are populated when information was available.
The energy consumption and fossil CO2 emissions from the Canadian vegetable greenhouse industry were assessed using greenhouse statistics from 2002 to 2007. The fossil CO2 emissions were compared to the fossil CO2 emitted during transport of an equal weight of food by truck and by airplane from two horticultural production centers in the southern USA to four locations in Canada. The calculations in this paper for Canadian greenhouse energy use for heating were verified against farm energy use survey data collected from greenhouse operators in 1996. Allowing for extrapolations to 1996 from the 2002 to 2007 period, the survey data were underestimated by 12%. Since the survey data were not corrected for possible household...

This project integrates fire risk models, species distribution models (SDMs) and population models with scenarios of future climate and land cover to project how the effects of climate-induced changes to species distributions and land use change will impact threatened species in fire-prone ecosystems. This project also identifies and prioritizes potential management responses to climate change (e.g. assisted colonization, fire management, land protection, dispersal corridors). Anticipated products include: 1) maps (digital and hard copy) of habitat suitability under current and future climate change, current and future projected urban growth and combinations of climate change and future projected urban growth, under...

This dataset explores the physical reality of the population growth from 2005 to 2060 without changes to existing land use policy or gross urban density. The land use suitability analysis displayed in this dataset was performed by the GeoPlan Center for 1000 Friends of Florida and is a companion study to "A Time for Leadership: Growth Management and Florida 2060" prepared for 1000 Friends of Florida by researchers at Georgia Tech's Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development. GeoPlan's project was undertaken using relatively straightforward geographic information systems (GIS) suitability analysis constructed on a foundation of clearly articulated assumptions. The three key assumptions were: 1) Population...

Monarch butterfly habitat—including milkweed host plants and nectar food sources—has declined drastically throughout most of the United States. Observed overwinter population levels have also exhibited a long-term downward trend that suggests a strong relationship between habitat loss and monarch population declines. To try and reverse this trend, there has been a call to action to engage in monarch conservation across all landscapes within the migratory pathway—and urban areas could play a critical role, but how?The Field Museum, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, have spent the last year working on an Urban Monarch landscape conservation design (LCD), or a “Monarch’s view of the city”, project...

The focus of the first Midwest Urban Conservation Workshop was to understand the challenges stakeholders are facing, define the needs for collaboration and best management practices, establish a platform for conversation focusing on learning from each other and creating an opportunity for collaboration on new initiatives through a collective impact. The workshop was framed around the idea of making a collective impact, as what happens upstream directly affects what happens downstream. Over 40 participants included scientists, urban planners, and state, federal, private and nonprofit organizations with interests in creating a network of professionals interested in the value of our waterways. We envision a world where...
