Aerial photography surveys during and after the 2018 eruption of Veniaminof Volcano, Alaska were conducted to track the evolution of the lava flow field, active volcanic vent, and glacial ice loss from the eruption. Imagery from two surveys was processed with structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetric methods to derive the digital elevation models (DEMs) and orthophotos in this data release. The datasets cover the active volcanic cone and intracaldera ice cap, which both show significant topographic and groundcover change between surveys, and relative to previous topographic reference data, due to the 2018 eruption and variable snow and ice cover. A syn-eruption survey on September 26, 2018 was conducted by the...

This dataset contains Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) footage from the 2018 eruption of Kīlauea Volcano’s lower East Rift Zone (LERZ), Island of Hawai‘i. The four-month-long eruption, from May 3 to September 5, produced lava flows that destroyed 723 structures, inundated 35.5 km2 of land, and added 3.5 km2 of new land to the Island of Hawai‘i. There are 1178 UAS videos in this publication, recorded from May 27 to September 8, which have been separated into sub-pages by month. Videos taken during each month are separated into zipped files by date (YYYY/MM/DD) and location. Sub-pages for each month also contain a ReadMe text file with information pertaining to the videos, including flight end time, video duration,...
This dataset contains Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) footage from the 2018 summit collapse of Kīlauea Volcano, Island of Hawai‘i. The intrusion of magma into Kīlauea’s lower East Rift Zone triggered draining of the summit lava lake and magma withdrawal from the shallow reservoir. This resulted in 62 subsequent collapse events at the summit between May and early-August 2018. Each collapse event released energy equivalent to a magnitude-5.3 earthquake. The total collapse volume was about 0.8 km^3, with subsidence of more than 500 m in some places. There are 73 UAS videos in this publication, recorded from May 19 to September 5, which have been separated into subpages by month. Sub-pages for each month also contain...
This product includes rose diagrams and tables of wind patterns at volcanoes listed in the Smithsonian Institution’s Volcanoes of the World Database. At each volcano, the speed and direction of wind above the volcano were read from output of the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 model, at twice-daily intervals from January 1, 1990 to December 28, 2009. These results were then plotted as 20 wind rose diagrams, divided into four seasons and five elevation intervals, and as one summary plot for year-round winds at 0-5 km elevation above sea level. Rose petals indicate the downwind direction of the wind vector. These rose diagrams are wrapped into a single zip file for each volcano. Also included in the zip file are five...

This data release contains digital video files from the USGS of Mount St. Helens volcano in the months leading up to the cataclysmic eruption on May 18, 1980 as well as the first two years of the eruption. Original videos were collected on an assortment of cameras and film types, including 16 mm, 8 mm and Super 8 mm during USGS field campaigns on the ground as well as from the air and on time-lapse camera stations setup around the volcano. Videos capture USGS crews collecting data as well as an assortment of volcanic processes, including dome growth, ash emissions, rockslides, and pyroclastic flows. These film records represent a tremendous resource to the volcanology community as they represent visual recordings...
