The U.S. Geological Survey, Voyageurs National Park, South Dakota State University, and Missouri Department of Conservation conducted a cooperative study to measure ratios of strontium to calcium (Sr:Ca) in cross sections of pectoral fin rays obtained from lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) captured in lakes and rivers of Namakan Reservoir in Minnesota and Ontario. We measured Sr:Ca ratios in cross sections of 37 pectoral fin rays collected from 10 locations (5 rivers and 5 lakes) in Namakan Reservoir as part of a larger study to investigate whether relations between Sr:Ca in water and pectoral fin rays were significant and useful for determining migratory histories of lake sturgeon in Namakan Reservoir. Pectoral...

These data tables summarize land cover classifications, slope measurements, and inundated area estimates for several lakes in northern Minnesota, as part of a larger project seeking to identify associations between young-of-year Yellow Perch mercury content and water level metrics, temperature, and annual deposition data in a multivariate analysis. One table presents inundated area estimates for a range of water surface elevations in 0.1 meter increments between a range of seasonal minimum and maximum water surface elevation values. The other table summarizes the percent cover and number of hectares of each land cover class within a specified buffered area around each study sampling site, along with a measure of...

Water level fluctuations substantially alter the fauna, flora and microbial community of near-shore aquatic ecosystems. Water level management therefore has the potential to strongly influence a wide variety of ecosystem processes. Many northern temperate lake food webs experience substantial methylmercury contamination, which is partially mediated by the action of sulfate reducing bacteria occurring in sediments that are periodically inundated. For lakes with methylmercury problems, water level management could be designed to reduce methylmercury contamination. These data summarize inundated areas at varying water surface elevations for several northern Minnesota lakes, as part of the project described above. The...

The vegetation spatial database coverage is of Voyageurs National Park and extended environs, covering 156,886 hectares (387,674 acres). Voyageurs National Park comprises 88,244 hectares (218,055 acres) of the total coverage area (56%). Almost 33,000 polygons make up the coverage, each with map unit description and physiognomic attribute information. The database provides crosswalk information to all USNVC floristic and physiognomic levels and several other classification systems (ecological groups/subgroups, Minnesota communities, NW Ontario forest and wetland ecosystems, USGS land use/land cover). A total of 50 USNVC associations make up the vegetation at Voyageurs National Park and environs. With all vegetation...

This data release provides phytoplankton identification, phytoplankton enumeration, chlorophyll concentration, phaeophytin concentration, phycocyanin data, and nutrient quality assurance data from three recurring algal bloom sites in Kabetogama Lake, Voyaguers National Park, Minnesota in 2016 and 2017. The goal of this research is to better understand the drivers of algal bloom toxicity in the large lakes of Voyageurs National Park so that resource managers may better predict, manage, and mitigate the occurrence of harmful algal blooms. A total of 126 environmental samples were collected at three recreational areas where blooms frequently occur. One site, Sullivan Bay, was chosen for more intensive sampling, including...
The geodatabase contains 13 relate tables that together provide updated and synchronized classifications to an existing vegetation map layer for each of the nine park units in the Great Lakes Network (GLKN) of the National Park Service (NPS) Natural Resource Inventory and Monitoring Program. The classifications include 1) vegetation types at every hierarchical level in the 2015 version of the U.S. National Vegetation Classification (USNVC) and 2) map classes that represent vegetation and land cover in the vegetation map layers. Furthermore, the tables provide a crosswalk between the two classifications (vegetation and map). Each park unit in GLKN has received, at different times over several years, vegetation data...

This data set contains information on detections of anuran (i.e., frogs and toads) species at six different management areas in the midwestern United States from 2002 to 2012. From 2002 to 2005 anuran communities were surveyed during the day using multiple methods at individual study wetlands—visual encounter surveys, dip net surveys, and calling surveys using multiple observers in most cases. Data are presented from each survey. From 2008 to 2012 amphibian communities were surveyed through detections of vocalizing anurans recorded by automated recording units. Automated recording units recorded five minutes at the top of every hour for the entire field season (typically April through October). Recorder data are...

Bathymetric data were collected with a single-beam echosounder in 2022 for 18 selected shallow (0-3 meters) areas to improve a digital elevation model (DEM) for Rainy Lake and Namakan Reservoir created by Environment and Climate Change Canada. Bathymetric data were collected in transects spaced approximately 20 meters apart. In addition to the bathymetric data, the locations and elevations of observed water surface and recovered high-water marks are being provided at select locations because of the high water observed during bathymetric data collection after a spring flood in 2022.

Multiple linear regression models were developed using data collected in 2016 and 2017 from three recurring bloom sites in Kabetogama Lake in northern Minnesota. These models were developed to predict concentrations of cyanotoxins (anatoxin-a, microcystin, and saxitoxin) that occur within the blooms. Virtual Beach software (version 3.0.6) was used to develop four models: two cyanotoxin mixture (MIX) models and two microcystin (MC) models. Models include those using readily available environmental variables (for example, wind speed and specific conductance) and those using additional comprehensive variables (based on laboratory analyses). Many of the independent variables were averages over a certain time period...
