The Database was built to enable data integration across sources, as well as to support program planning and observational network design. The Imiq Data Portal provides a snapshot of available hydroclimate data – a map-based view of where , what , and when data have been obtained. Users can submit a custom data query, specifying variable of interest, geographic bounds, and time step. Imiq will aggregate and export data records from multiple sources in a common format, with full metadata records that provide information about the source data.

The Imiq Hydroclimate Database houses hydrologic, climatologic, and soils data collected in Alaska and Western Canada from the early 1900s to the present. This database unifies and preserves numerous data collections that have, until now, been stored in field notebooks, on desktop computers, as well as in disparate databases. Synthesizing and analyzing the large-scale hydroclimate characteristics of this important climatic region have been made easier with this searchable database. The data, originally collected in a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 relational database, has been migrated to an open source PostgreSQL and PostGIS environment. The Imiq Data Portal provides public access to portions of the Imiq Hydroclimate...

Alaska’s freshwater resources, vitally important for salmon and other species, are vulnerable to changes resulting from climate change. Though temperature is a critical element in the suitability of aquatic habitats, Alaska’s stream and lake temperature monitoring is occurring through independent agencies/partners without a means to link and share data. Because a coordinated network of monitoring data can help scientists and managers understand how aquatic systems are responding to climate change, conducting an inventory of past and present stream and lake temperature monitoring efforts has been identified as a priority science need for Alaska. This project consolidated existing monitoring site locations and attributes...

Through a grant from the US Fish and Wildlife Service on behalf of the Western Alaska Landscape Conservation Cooperative (WALCC), we have developed a comprehensive statewide inventory of current and historic continuous monitoring locations for stream and lake temperature. This project is one component of the LCC’s strategy to help partners understand and prepare for potential climate impacts to freshwater systems across Alaska. This project compiled a statewide catalog of monitoring locations using a common set of attributes. The inventory is fully accessible via an online mapping interface or it can be viewed and queried directly within commercial GIS software. Future LCC projects will entail gathering the aquatic...

The North Slope Science Initiative (NSSI) identified an updated, consistent and accurate land cover data set as a primary base layer requirement for its long-term science and planning activities on the North Slope. The map described in this document is the outcome of a multi-year project to produce a moderate resolution land cover base layer to meet NSSI requirements. New Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) 30 meter resolution landcover maps were produced for the far western arctic, and for the area between the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska (NPRA) and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In the NPRA, an existing land cover map from the 1990’s was “crosswalked” to the NSSI land cover map classes, and a large portion of...

GAP species range data show a coarse representation of the total areal extent of a species or the geographic limits within which a species can be found (Morrison and Hall 2002). To represent these geographic limits, GAP compiled existing GAP data, where available, and NatureServe data (Patterson et al. 2003, Ridgely et al. 2007, NatureServe 2010) IUCN data (IUCN 2004), where needed. Data provided by GAP in collaboration with the Northwest Gap Analysis Project (NWGAP), the Southwest Regional Gap Analysis Project (SWReGAP), the Southeast Gap Analysis Project (SEGAP), the Alaska Gap Analysis Project (AKGAP), the Hawaii Gap Analysis Project (HIGAP), the Puerto Rico Gap Analysis Project (PRGAP), and the U.S. Virgin Islands...

BioMap Alaska is a citizen science observation and information management tool. BioMap Alaska engages residents of coastal communities to voluntarily report observations and local knowledge of marine life. This project is intended to improve and expand upon science based monitoring activities, and to further cooperation and collaboration among local people, researchers, and resource managers. We provide a field guide of “species of interest” on which we are seeking information and web-based data logging so that that observers can enter their observations and view these on an online map. Anyone who is interested can view the BioMap data.WHY DO WE NEED BIOMAP ALASKA?There are ongoing and significant ocean environment...

The Arctic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) and the North Slope Science Initiative have both identified the importance of synthesizing and disseminating existing climate and hydrology data as well as improving the design of climate and hydrologic monitoring networks to meet management and research needs. We have partnered with the Arctic LCC to address this issue. During this project we designed a geodatabase called Imiq, inventoried hydrologic, climate, and related datasets, and populated the Imiq database with both data and metadata. Finally, we analyzed some of the spatial characteristics of the existing hydroclimate data and the observational network structure, in an effort to inform the development...
