This dataset consists of physics-based Delft3D model and Delwaq model input files used in modeling sediment deposition and concentrations around the coral reefs of west Maui, Hawaii. The Delft3D models were used to simulate waves and currents under small (SC1) and large (‘SC2’) wave conditions for current stream discharge (‘Alt1’) and stream discharge with watershed restoration (‘Alt3’). Delft3D model results were subsequently used as forcing conditions for Delwaq models to simulate sediment transport and dispersion. The Delwaq models were used to simulate sediment transport and concentrations under the same two wave and stream discharge scenarios. The Delwaq models were run using forcing conditions generated by...

This data release contains the source code for the 1-D Deep Ventilation (1DDV) model (written in the Matlab programming language), and the input and output data from that model that were used to simulate temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) at specific depths in the lake. The input data consisted of: 1. daily average surface water temperature either a. collected by thermistors (Crawford_and_Collier_2007) between 1992 and 2013 and used for calibration/validation, or b. simulated by air2water from downscaled MACA outputs of air temperature (Abatzoglou_and_Brown_2012) for future simulations following the method in Piccolroaz_et_al_2013; 2. daily average wind speed either a. collected by the National Parks...

A three-dimensional hydrodynamic and sediment transport model application of the mouth of the Columbia River (MCR) was constructed using the Delft3D4 (D3D) modeling suite (Deltares, 2021) to simulate water levels, flow, waves, and sediment transport for time period of September 22, 2020 to March 10, 2021. The model was used to predict the dispersal of sediment from a submerged, nearshore berm composed of sediment that was dredged from the entrance to the MCR navigation channel and placed on the northern flank of the ebb-tidal delta. This data release describes the development and validation of the model application and provides input files suitable to run the models on D3D software version 4.04.01.

This dataset records results from a bottom-deployed upward-looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP, 600 kHz Workhorse Monitor, Teledyne RD Instruments, Poway, California) deployed during the summer of 2019 (late June until early August) near Hammond Bay, Lake Huron (45.5948 degrees north, -84.1542 degrees east). Data were collected in support of nearby Cladophora and benthic algal assessments, as well as to validate hydrodynamic modeling.

This data set consists of physics-based Delft3D-FLOW and SWAN hydrodynamic models input files used to study the wave-induced 3D flow over spur-and-groove (SAG) formations. SAG are a common and impressive characteristic of coral reefs. They are composed of a series of submerged shore-normal coral ridges (spurs) separated by shore-normal patches of sediment (grooves) on the fore reef of coral reef environments. Although their existence and geometrical properties are well documented, the literature concerning the hydrodynamics around them is sparse. Here, the three-dimensional flow patterns over SAG formations, and a sensitivity of those patterns to waves, currents, and SAG geometry were examined. Shore-normal shoaling...

A set of physics-based XBeach Non-hydrostatic hydrodynamic model simulations (with input files here included) were used to evaluate how varying carbonate budgets, and thus coral reef accretion and degradation, affect alongshore variations in wave-driven water levels along the adjacent shoreline of Buck Island Reef National Monument (BUIS) for a number of sea-level rise scenarios, specifically during extreme wave conditions when the risk for coastal flooding and the resulting impact to coastal communities is greatest. These input files accompany the modeling conducted for the following publication: Toth, L.T., Storlazzi, C.D., Kuffner, I.B., Quataert, E., Reyns, J., McCall, R.T., Stathakopoulos, A., Hillis-Starr,...

The Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST Warner and others, 2019; Warner and others, 2010) model was used to simulate three-dimensional hydrodynamics and waves to study salinity intrusion in the Delaware Bay estuary for 2019. Salinity intrusion in coastal systems is due in part to extreme events like drought or low-pressure storms and longer-term sea level rise, threatening economic infrastructure and ecological health. Along the eastern seaboard of the United States, approximately 13 million people rely on the water resources of the Delaware River basin, which is actively managed to suppress the salt front (or ~0.52 daily averaged psu line) through river discharge targets. However, river discharge...

This data release contains gridded bathymetry data from repeated multibeam sonar surveys and input files for a hydrodynamic and sediment transport model application of the mouth of the Columbia River (MCR), Oregon and Washington. The bathymetry data were collected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Portland District Surveys Section between September 9, 2020, and March 10, 2021, to characterize the morphology and dispersal of a nearshore berm composed of 216,000 m3 of sand-sized sediment that was dredged from the MCR navigation channel and placed on the northern flank of the ebb-tidal delta in water depths between 12 and 15 m. Observations of berm morphology were compared with predictions from a three-dimensional...

In this experimental series we studied the swimming capabilities and response of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) larvae to flow turbulence in a laboratory flume. We compared three different experimental configurations, representing in-stream obstructions commonly found in natural streams (e.g. a gravel bump, a single vertical cylinder, and patches of submerged rigid vegetation). Grass carp larvae (post gas bladder emergence) were introduce to each experimental configuration and subjected to a variety of hydrodynamic forces of different magnitudes and scales. We varied the flow velocities and water depths and found threshold values of turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds stresses that triggered an apparent...

The goal of this study was to develop a suite of inter-related water quality monitoring approaches capable of modeling and estimating the spatial and temporal gradients of particulate and dissolved total mercury (THg) concentration, and particulate and dissolved methyl mercury (MeHg), concentration, in surface waters across the Sacramento / San Joaquin River Delta (SSJRD). This suite of monitoring approaches included: a) data collection at fixed continuous monitoring stations (CMS) outfitted with in-situ sensors, b) spatial mapping using boat-mounted flow-through sensors, and c) satellite-based remote sensing. The focus of this specific child page is to document the temporal high-resolution (15 minute) in-situ sensor...

Background: Presque Isle State Park (PISP), located in northwestern Pennsylvania, is located on a 3,127 acre peninsula that extends into Lake Erie. Approximately 7 miles long, PISP is a recurving sand spit where the width of the neck is less than 1,000 feet and the center, eastern end exceeds 1 mile. The park boundary extends 500 feet offshore around the perimeter of the peninsula. The spit forms an embayment, Presque Isle Bay, between its southern shore and the northern shore of the city of Erie. A channel at the east end of the bay is maintained by dredging to permit ship access to the harbor. PISP is considered a unique heritage park as it contains the only “seashore” area in Pennsylvania. Sand erosion, as on...
