It has become increasingly apparent that diet can be a major source of trace metal bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms. In this study, we examined cadmium uptake, efflux, and subcellular compartmentalization dynamics in the freshwater oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus. L. variegatus is an important component of freshwater food webs in Europe and North America and is potentially useful as a standard food source for laboratory-based trophic transfer studies. Cadmium accumulation and depuration were each followed for 10 days. Rate constants of uptake (ku) and efflux (ke) were estimated and subcellular Cd compartmentalization was followed over the course of uptake and efflux. The partitioning of Cd into operationally-defined...

This data release includes water-quality data collected at 38 sites in central and eastern Massachusetts from April 2018 through May 2019 by the U.S. Geological Survey to support the implementation of site-dependent aluminum criteria for Massachusetts waters. Samples of effluent and receiving surface waters were collected monthly at four wastewater-treatment facilities (WWTFs) and seven water-treatment facilities (WTFs) (see SWQ_data_and_instantaneous_CMC_CCC_values.txt). The measured properties and constituents include pH, hardness, and filtered (dissolved) organic carbon, which are required inputs to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Aluminum Criteria Calculator version 2.0 (U.S. Environmental Protection...

Biological endpoints for three focal test species [Daphnia magna (mortality), Psuedacris maculata (mortality, growth, and development), and Lemna gibba (growth)] in response to exposure to reconstituted or field-collected water under laboratory conditions. Field-collected waters were collected from wetlands within the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of the United States. Reconstituted water was mixed to mimic some chemistry of surface water from brine contaminated PPR wetlands. Also included are water quality and chemical concentration data from all assays.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the chronic toxicity of potassium (tested as KCl) to a commonly tested unionid mussel (fatmucket, Lampsilis siliquoidea) at five water hardness levels (25, 50, 100, 200, 300 mg/L as CaCO3) representing most surface waters in the United States. Chronic 28-d potassium chloride toxicity tests were conducted with 3-week-old juvenile fatmucket using six concentrations of potassium in the five base waters of differing hardness using ASTM standard methods. In this data release we report individual survival, mass, and length along with chemical and water quality measurements.
