Groundwater withdrawals are published by county and use type every 5 years by the U.S. Geological Survey (http://water.usgs.gov/watuse/) and published values often do not specify the aquifer(s) from which the withdrawals are derived. The items included in this dataset represent estimates of water use by aquifer in the southeastern United States in order to provide better insight into the 3-dimensional distribution of groundwater withdrawals in time and space.
This data release contains monthly and annual water-use estimates from the Aquaculture and Irrigation Water-Use Model version 1.0 for the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, April 1999 to October 2017. Aquaculture and irrigation estimates contained in this data release are representative of groundwater withdrawal for six different categories: aquaculture, cotton, corn, rice, soybeans, and all other crops. Contained in this data release are monthly and annual estimates by water-use category and monthly and annual total estimates. Monthly and annual totals are a summation of water use for aquaculture, cotton, corn, rice, soybeans, and all other crops, by month and by year. Also contained in this data release are lands permitted...

For more than 100 years, the Permian Basin has been an important source of oil and gas produced from conventional reservoirs; directional drilling combined with hydraulic fracturing has greatly increased production in the past 10 years to the extent that the Permian Basin is becoming one of the world’s largest continuous oil and gas (COG) producing fields (U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2020). These recent techniques extract oil and gas by directionally drilling and hydraulically fracturing the surrounding reservoir rock. The extraction of COG by using these techniques requires large volumes of water and estimates of the total water volume used in COG require a comprehensive assessment to determine the...
Understanding the number of acres of farmland irrigated and the amount of water used for irrigation is central to water-resource planning and public decision making. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Water Resources (TDEC-DWR), compiled available 5-year, county-level data on irrigated acres in Tennessee from 1934 to 2017 from published reports by the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Other data published in this dataset are summary statistics for irrigated acreage in Tennessee from 1934-2017, the top counties with the largest number of irrigated acres for each reporting year, as well as a county-level...

This dataset presents water withdrawal estimates, consumption estimates, and associated information for 1,122 water-using, utility scale thermoelectric power plants in the United States for 2015. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) developed models to estimate thermoelectric water use based on linked heat-and-water budgets, including thermodynamically plausible ranges of minimum and maximum withdrawal and consumption, to provide a consistent method for water-use estimation across the fleet of U.S. thermoelectric plants. Historically, thermoelectric water withdrawal and consumption has been estimated by the Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration (EIA) based on surveys of plant operator-reported data...

This data release contains digital data generated by the U.S. Geological Survey under cooperative agreements with Sonoma County Water Agency and the California State Water Resources Control Board to characterize the three-dimensional hydrogeology and water quality of the Russian River Watershed, located in the northern part of the California Coast Ranges section of the Pacific Border province. This dataset contains borehole lithologic and hydrologic data, geospatial data of a three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework model (3D HFM), and gravity data used to support development of the framework model. The borehole dataset is released as a series of .csv ascii files including (1) individual borehole location and construction...

This dataset contains water-use estimates for 2015 that are aggregated to the county level in the United States. The U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS's) National Water Use Science Project is responsible for compiling and disseminating the Nation's water-use data. Working in cooperation with local, State, and Federal agencies, the USGS has published an estimate of water use in the United States every 5 years, beginning in 1950. Water-use estimates aggregated to the State level are presented in USGS Circular 1441, "Estimated Use of Water in the United States in 2015" (Dieter and others, 2018). This dataset contains the county-level water-use data that support the state-level estimates in Dieter and others 2018. This...

This dataset contains information on the degree of potential human influence near 2228 groundwater wells in the U.S. glacial aquifer system. Data include well identification number, name, latitude, longitude, potential-human-influence category, percent urban and crop land use in a 500 meter radius around each well, and measures of county-based groundwater use and irrigation. Ancillary information includes nearest appropriate streamflow gaging stations and meteorological stations, and also climate division for each well.

The U.S. Geological Survey collected water-quality samples from 3,199 sites between May 2004 and April 2022 for the California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program Priority Basin Project (GAMA-PBP). The GAMA-PBP is a cooperative project with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). The primary objectives of the GAMA-PBP are: (1) to assess the quality of groundwater resources used for public and domestic drinking water supplies, (2) to develop understanding of the natural and anthropogenic processes controlling groundwater quality and changes in groundwater quality, and (3) to improve the availability and usefulness of groundwater quality information to public. This data release...
