Project involves analyzing datasets using two measures: Spatial similarity of the distributed precipitation and temperature fields of the study datasets Implications on hydrologic modeling We will then provide guidance on the choice of datasets for statistical downscaling of GCM outputs used in different types of scale-dependent planning assessments. We will evaluate these differences from a hydrological standpoint at specific Reclamation basins: Animas at Durango, Colorado; Snake at Heise, Idaho; Sacramento at Redding, California; Salt at Chrysotile, Arizona; Yellowstone River at Billings, Montana; and Colorado River at Lees Ferry Utah and Arizona. The analysis will indicate whether the choice of forcing a...
Land managers in the Great Basin are working to maintain or restore sagebrush ecosystems as climate change exacerbates existing threats. Web applications delivering climate change and climate impacts information have the potential to assist their efforts. Although many web applications containing climate information currently exist, few have been co-produced with land managers or have incorporated information specifically focused on land managers’ needs. Through surveys and interviews, we gathered detailed feedback from federal, state, and tribal sagebrush land managers in the Great Basin on climate information web applications targeting land management. We found that a) managers are searching for weather and climate...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. The digital data set provides locations and general descriptions of sites instrumented to collect micrometeorological data from which mean annual ET rates were computed. Sites are located in Ash Meadows and Oasis Valley, Nevada. Data were collected December 1993 through present.

This dataset contains 4222 point locations corresponding to 136 weather station locations in or bordering Wyoming. Each of the 136 weather stations includes 31 points, with the same latitude longitude, for different years (1970-2000). Each point contains attributes for total precipitation in inches for each month, as well as an annual precipitation for the year. The data were obtained from the Western Regional Climatic data website.

This representativity index is based on how many stations exist within a grid of 50 km by 50 km. This number is adjusted by landscape variability, and variability is defined by the number of unique elevation values within a 50 by 50 km window. A 50 km by 50 km window with only one elevation value (very flat), can be well represented by one station; however a complex landscape like the sierra might need more stations to be better represented. In this raster layer, the higher values represent more uncertainty; lower values represent less uncertainty.

Watches, Warnings and Advisories A warning is issued when a hazardous weather or hydrologic event is occurring, imminent or likely. A warning means weather conditions pose a threat to life or property. People in the path of the storm need to take protective action. A watch is used when the risk of a hazardous weather or hydrologic event has increased significantly, but its occurrence, location or timing is still uncertain. It is intended to provide enough lead time so those who need to set their plans in motion can do so. A watch means that hazardous weather is possible. People should have a plan of action in case a storm threatens and they should listen for later information and possible warnings especially...

The dataset includes a table in comma delimited format of daily evapotranspiration (ET) from 6/14/2018 to 12/31/2020 from an ET station within the Blue Cypress Marsh Conservation Area, within Indian River County, Florida. Evapotranspiration was estimated using eddy-covariance methods and missing records were gap-filled with a version of the Turc equation (Trajkovic and Kolakovic, 2009) that was regressed against observed values of eddy-covariance ET. The Turc equation performed exceptionally well (r-squared value of 0.94) for reproducing observed daily ET rates. Daily ET values estimated with the Turc equation are identified by a column with a "T" value indicator. Data processing methods were similar to methods...

The dataset consists of a table in Excel format of daily evapotranspiration (ET) from 12/1/2015 to 6/13/2018 at ET station within the Blue Cypress Marsh Conservation Area near Vero Beach, Florida. Evapotranspiration was estimated using eddy-covariance methods. Data processing followed methods outlined by Shoemaker and others (2011). Ancillary data includes net radiation, latent heat, sensible heat, relative humidity, air temperature, water depth above land surface or depth to water below land surface (-), and Bowen's ratio. The site location is 27°41'46", -80°42'43". Released data include mean daily latent heat (LE, in watts per square meter), available energy (Ae, in watts per square meter), and sensible heat (H,...
Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) has been developing web applications to centralize and serve credible and usable information that allows natural resource managers, as well as the general public, to better understand the challenges posed by on-going environmental change. In particular CBI has designed a series of climate consoles that provide natural resource managers the most recent 5th Climate Model Intercomparison Program (CMIP5) climate projections, landscape intactness, and soil sensitivity for a series of reporting units over the western United States. The publically available web sites were refined based on feedback from a variety of users. In this paper, we describe each of the tools developed as open-source...

Historical cooperative station index. Cooperative stations are U.S. stations operated by local observers which generally report max/min temperatures and precipitation. National Weather Service (NWS) data are also included in this dataset. The data receive extensive automated + manual quality control. The index includes a county location cross-reference. Over 8000 stations are currently active across the country.
Two populations of boreal toads (Bufo boreas) experienced drastic declines in abundance in the late 1990s. Evidence supported the hypothesis of disease (the chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) as the cause of these declines, but other hypotheses had not been evaluated. We used an 11-year capture-recapture data set to evaluate weather and disease as causes of these declines. We developed sets of mathematical models that reflected hypothesized relationships between several weather variables and annual survival rates of adult males in these populations. In addition, models that reflected the possibility that the declines were caused by an introduced fungus were developed. All models were fit to the data...
In the sagebrush/bunchgrass steppe of the North American Great Basin soil water potential has been shown to exhibit diel fluctuations with water potential increasing during the night as a result of water loss from roots in relatively dry soil layers. We hypothesized that environmental conditions promoting low transpiration rates (shading, cloudiness) would cause a net increase in soil water potential as a result of reduced soil water depletion during the day and continuing water efflux from roots during the night. We examined the response of soil water potential to artificial shading in sagebrush/bunchgrass plantings and used a simple model to predict how soil water potential should respond to reduced transpiration....

The Colorado River is the dominant water source for the southwestern United States, crossing through seven states before reaching Mexico. The river supplies water to approximately 36 million people, irrigates nearly six million acres of farmland within and beyond the basin, and contributes an estimated 26 billion dollars each year to the region’s recreational economy. Yet the Colorado River’s water supply is already fully allocated, meaning that the economic and environmental health of the region is closely tied to the river’s streamflow. Climate projections for the Southwest show a future marked by chronic drought and substantial reductions in streamflow. The region has already been impacted by climate change,...

Meteorology at the land surface affects many processes in the terrestrial biogeochemical system. Measurements of near-surface meteorological conditions are made at many locations, but we are often faced with having to perform ecosystem process simulations in areas where no meteorological measurements have been taken. In some cases it is possible to install new instrumentation for a particular study, but there are many situations where this is not a feasible solution. These problems are particularly important for simulations over large regions, where the number of simulation points is likely to be far greater than the number of observation stations. Daymet is a model that generates daily surfaces of temperature,...
