Index card: This pump formerly sat on its concrete base. At the time of the earthquake, water and sand were forced up the casing and played against the base of the pump gradually raising it some 8 inches above its former position. The sand shows as light tan; the concrete base is light gray. Hebgen Lake earthquake. Gallatin County, Montana. August 1959.

Index card: Red Canyon fault scarp at the Blarneystone Ranch. Green roof on upthrown block marks the position of shattered storage shed. Long blue roof is part of the servants' quarters of the Blarneystone Ranch. The fault scarp ends in the small grove of aspen which shows just beyond the blue roof. Regrettably this photograph does not show the feature as well as one would wish. A gravel pile established by the Montana Highway Department was jostled about by the earthquake and as a result compacted the ground below it to form a big, broad, shallow depression. Album caption and index card: Sandspouts developed on the floor of the Hebgen Lake. This photo was taken in 1960 when Hebgen Lake was drained to permit the dam to be repaired. The sandspouts were formed below water on the night of the earthquake. Tepee Creek quadrangle, Gallatin County, Montana.
